Our Stay at the Chateau de Montriou

Angers, France, French Travel Review, Loire Valley

Next stop on our European vacation tour was Angers, France. Now, this one was completely researched and planned by yours truly. We’ve gone to the big city of Paris, but I wanted to do something so very French, and that meant staying in the country at a French chateau. Little did I know that when I picked our particular chateau, it would be everything we expected and very far off the beaten path.Angers, France, French Travel Review, Loire Valley

Let me introduce you to the Château de Montriou, situated in the heart of the Loire Valley. I found this chateau on trusty tripadvisor.com, where previous guests gave their stay extremely high ratings. Add to that the stunning pictures on the website and I was sold. The chateau itself was once a castle that dated back to the fifteenth century. Built just next to it is a chapel called the “Three Maries,” also built in the fifteenth century, in memory of King René of Anjou by Charles de Beauveau. In the last century, the castle has been expanded, but they haven’t changed the original structure other than repairs. The castle also has incredible gardens that are maintained by one of the chateau owners, Nicole. She is particularly famous for her pumpkin garden.

This would be the 15th century chapel - quaint but impressive.

When we arrived, we were personally greeted by Nicole. Luckily for us, she speaks a bit of English, and proceeded to show us around the chateau and then to our room. We stayed in the “yellow room,” where pamphlets and brochures were awaiting us for a self-guided tour of the chateau and gardens. We were only staying one night, so we dropped our bags and immediately ventured outside to take a look at the grounds. Unfortunately, this area of France had been experiencing a drought, which meant there was not as much in bloom as advertised. That was okay, though, because the weather was perfect, the scenery was breathtaking, and Nicole herself joined us to talk about her pumpkins and the history of the castle.Angers, France, French Travel Review, Loire Valley

Breakfast was included at the chateau, so the next morning Matt and I awoke bright and early for fresh coffee and warm croissants, served again by Nicole. She encouraged us to take a look at the chapel after breakfast, telling us a bit about the history and emphasizing that it isn’t often that one steps foot in a chapel so old. It is amazing that this thing still stands, but obviously with the help of the owners, they have been able to preserve this piece of history. A bit dilapidated, the chapel is small and quaint, but there is no mistaking the beauty it once held. With its marble alter, stained glass windows, and wooden benches, I could almost imagine what mass must have looked like in the 1400s.

When it was time to go, I was a bit sad to leave such an interesting place with an amazing amount of rich history. But, there is only so much one can do out in the middle of nowhere! However, I highly recommend a chateau experience to anyone travelling to the French countryside.

A Day in London

Emily + vacation = bad, bad blogger. In an attempt to keep June alive and my readers somewhat interested, here are a few pictures from our fabulous journey to London. Our friend, Emily, is living there for the summer with her boyfriend, and we were so lucky to not only have a tour guide for my first trip to the city, but free accommodation, as well! Plus, it was an opportunity to visit with an American friend in Europe. How great is that?!

Travel, European Adventures

We saw the absolutely breathtaking Westminster Abbey. On the other side, I waved to my imaginary crowd, just like Kate Middleton. ;)

London, Travel, European Adventures

I liked this view of Buckingham Palace. We were lucky, because we stumbled across the palace during the changing of the guard, but because of the spectacle, it was packed with people and my other pictures aren’t as good. Still, it was a neat experience!

London, Travel, European Adventures

Matt liked the Animals in War statue a lot. It is “dedicated to all the animals that served and died alongside British and allied forces in wars and campaigns throughout time.”

We had a drink at this pub on the balcony in the Covent Garden Market, where we watched the strangest street performer. He had himself wrapped in cling-wrap from head to toe. There was quite a lot of buildup for such a strange (and frankly lame) trick.

Trafalgar Square is so neat – with it’s fountains, view of Big Ben in the back, and the London architecture all around, I thought this was a cool area. Check out the Olympic countdown in the bottom right of the picture.

These are just some of the highlights of our day. Emily was the best tour guide and took us to see just about everything! Along with what you see above, we walked through the Piccadilly Circus, strolled across the Thames, and had dinner at a fantastic and chic Dim Sum restaurant. I’d love to go back and see a show or actually go through a museum, but in just a day, we saw a lot. We had great hosts and I’m so glad I can check London off of my list of places I wanted to see.

Bittersweet Ending

Going Away Party, Wine Tasting

With Lauren, a great friend and host of our going away party! We started the night at a wine tasting.

Remember when I said at the end of my last post that life would be changing quite a bit for me and Matt in the coming months? Well, if you are reading this, you stayed tuned and I am ready to reveal. I would’ve waited a little bit longer, but sitting here on my couch this Sunday evening amidst packed bags and empty walls, I am compelled to finally share. So, for those of you who do not know…

Matt and I are leaving Ireland – permanently. That’s right, we’re moving this Tuesday.

After one amazing, educational, at times difficult, and life-changing year, we’ve made the decision to move on. Now don’t feel too shocked. When I decided to move to Ireland, it was with the knowledge that it would only be for about a year or a little longer. Yet that doesn’t change the fact that this feels oh so bittersweet. Though life was a challenge here at first, it became my home. I love our apartment, the farm next door, the Irish way of life, Suas, the AWCD, and most importantly, all of my new and fantastic friends. And in one year, many of these friends became like family.

Going Away Party, Wine Tasting

With Abby, a newer friend, but one I know I'll be visiting!

As someone with a lot on their mind and with so much to say, I can’t seem to find the words to truly articulate the way I’m feeling about the changes in our life right now. Last Wednesday, my closest friends threw a going away party for me and Matt, and though I didn’t cry, each and every goodbye hug and toast made things more real for me. I will take a lot of great things away from my life in Ireland and I am encouraged by the idea that I will be back someday.

So bear with me, because Matt and I are about to jump on the crazy ride of life. Along the way I will be sure to share just about everything, including one week long tour of Europe before flying to Texas. In the meantime, pop back to some of my old posts. I am so very glad I created this blog, because with just a click of a button, I’m transported in time to some of the most memorable, amazing, and crazy moments of my time in Ireland!

Some of my favorite pictures from the last year. :)

When visiting Matt in March 2010, we went out to Killarney. It was absolutely beautiful.

At my favorite restaurant in Dublin, The Port House. Yum!

With the gals in the St. Stephen's Green park for lunch. It was a nice work day break, and even though we look all bundled up, it felt pretty nice out!

Still my favorite of all the trips Matt and I have taken this past year - Bruges! This trip was my inspiration to start the blog, because I wanted all my family at home to hear about it.

Our lovely view of the animals in the Airfield next to the apartment.

And who can forget hiking in the Dublin mountains?!

Life These Days

First night home in Texas. Me and Em at Paul's show at the Patio Grill!

Dallas for Memorial Day weekend, Melissa’s birthday, North Carolina for my cousin’s wedding – how can I possibly sum up one long and fantastic vacation in a single blog post? I plan on doing it with many pictures and a whole lot of enthusiasm. I do realize I have a lot of time to make up for, but I’m ready to dive right back in!

I’ve known for awhile that I would be planning a trip to the States for my cousin, Brian’s, wedding. The location was Lake Lure in North Carolina, but I decided to add a little time to my trip and head to Dallas first. This gave me more time to see some friends back home, celebrate my sister’s birthday, and get in extra family time. I spent a lot of time by our pool in the sun, something I’ve been missing greatly. In fact, I spent almost every day of my vacation by the pool/lake at some point. I’ve now got A TON of freckles back on my face – I missed those little guys.

Melissa and Kristen at her birthday dinner - she loved that tambourine!

Melissa’s 24th birthday was Saturday, May 28, so the Friday night before we gathered with some of her closest friends and danced our way to her big day. We started at Monica Aca y Alla’s, a Mexican restaurant in Deep Ellum that serves up strong margaritas, fantastic food, live music, and an hourly conga line. Once Melissa got a hold of the tambourine the show was on! Now, everyone that knows me knows how much I love chips and queso, so choosing this spot for her birthday was just as great for me! On Saturday, we laid by the pool soaking up the sun and then went to dinner at Patrizio’s with our parents. Good food two nights in a row and I really felt like I was home.

Waterskiing for the first time! I'm loving the picturesque view of Lake Lure in the background.

On Wednesday I flew with my family to North Carolina to begin the wedding festivities previously mentioned. Lake Lure is one of the most beautiful places I’ve been to and I knew I was in store for a fun-filled weekend. I spent all of Thursday on the lake and learned how to waterski for the very first time! Yes, 25 years and it was my first time to try. I fell my first time, but on the second I popped right up. By the third go on the skis I felt comfortable and learned what is so enjoyable about the sport – well, minus the complete and utter soreness radiating throughout my body the next day.

Husband and wife for the first time!

What can I say about the rest of the wedding weekend? It was magical. Brian’s fiance (and now wife :-) ), Maggie, looked absolutely radiant the entire weekend – from the initial gathering at her family’s home on Thursday, to the rehearsal dinner, and topping it off with the wedding itself. We had a great time getting to know Maggie’s family; they were so much fun and extremely generous all weekend. I saw the majority of my large and lovable family (my Dad has 4 brothers and a sister, so I have tons of cousins), enjoying every second we spent catching up. The wedding was beautiful, followed by a stunning reception on Lake Lure. The food was great, the speeches were incredibly sweet, and the music enticed just about everyone to the dance floor. There is nothing quite like being with all of your family celebrating a special occasion.

I am officially back in Dublin now much tanner, but quite tired. I guess I need a vacation from my vacation. ;-) Matt and I have a lot in store for our lives soon, so be sure to stay posted!

Lake Lure, North Carolina

What a cutie! Melissa opted for kayaking instead of waterskiing.

Some of the gang! Cousins, uncles, aunts, and friends all gathered together after the rehearsal dinner.

My Dad with my cousin Molly - so cute. :-)

Sisterly love at the rehearsal dinner!

I took so many pictures on this trip, it’s just not possible to post them all! I tried to throw in some highlights. :-)
