Date Night at Home

Last week I wrote about how date nights need to be incorporated into our life more often, but I found out on Tuesday that date night at home can be just as fun. While going out has its perks – unique activities and someone else cooking/doing the dishes – there is certainly something to be said about staying in. Our recent date night at home consisted of fire-lit tiki torches, a cigar, veggie burgers, champagne, and television shows on the computer.

With the kind of weather we’ve been having, a little champagne on the patio is the perfect way to spend an evening.

All of these lights were turned off for the actual “television-watching,” but I couldn’t help but capture Matt with his cigar.

Yes, that is The Bachelorette. And yes, in Matt’s defense, I make him watch it. But in my defense, I’ve been watching a lot of European soccer lately…

Weekend Wrap-Up

Germany, Spain, Italy, France, England, Euro 2012, Sunshine, Summer, Food, Gibraltar

The scene in Gibraltar at kickoff of the Germany game.

Over the weekend, Matt and I decided to experience what Alcaidesa and Gibraltar have to offer during the summer months, which started Friday in Gibraltar immediately following work. The Euro 2012 (soccer for you Americans!) is currently the forefront of entertainment and competition over here, so we joined a large group of our German friends to watch the Germany vs. Greece game. I’ll tell you what – there is nothing quite like watching two countries battle it out. While we take sports in America very seriously, Europeans leave nothing on the table when it comes to loyalty for their nation’s team. Our viewing party took place at Savannah’s in Gibraltar, situated on the marina in Ocean Village. The restaurant is currently operating a huge outdoor television and by the start of the game, the entire surrounding area was packed – it was a good thing we had a reservation! Germany ended up winning the match and in the process, I learned some “colorful” German cheering language.

Steak and veggie kabobs on the grill!

Saturday greeted us with cloudy skies, much to my dismay. We had plans for friends to come over with their children to swim and it just didn’t look like it would be in the cards. Instead, Matt and I made a big trip to the grocery store to stock up on food and drink for the weekend and following work week. Luckily, the sun came out for a bit during the late afternoon, so we did a bit of sunbathing and swimming. For dinner, we grilled out another recipe courtesy of Eat, Live, Run, and once again, we were not disappointed. The steak and veggie kabobs with a creamy avocado dipping sauce were incredible. I got to use my food processor, which always make me idiotically happy, and Matt’s marinade for the steak was superb.

Following dinner, Matt and I made our way down to the restaurant at the bottom of the hill. Our plan was to watch the Spain vs. France match with the locals, followed by some nighttime partying on the beach. As for the match – a couple pints, warm outdoor seating and a Spanish win made for a delightful evening. We even ordered a plate of broiled tuna to feed to the stray neighborhood cats that were lurking around the patio. Following the match we walked down to the beach to see what was going on for La Noche de San Juan, and unfortunately, there really wasn’t much happening. However, the beach bar was in full-swing with pumping music and late night party-goers, so we joined in on the fun. We chatted with some other Alcaidesa residents and stayed out a little past our bedtime. ;)

I got to play with this little guy!

Sunday gave us brighter weather, so we had our friends over for the promised swim. There really is nothing cuter than two little ones laughing and splashing around in a pool. Thanks to the planned pool day, Matt and I now own an array of pool toys, most notably a pair of water guns that pretty much ensured not a single person would leave the yard dry – especially not after the kids learned how they work.

After a full weekend, Sunday evening was spent quietly, and that’s exactly what we needed. We used the leftover steak and vegetables from our skewers the night before and turned them into quesadillas, adding cheese and sour cream to the inside, and again using the avocado dipping sauce as a very nice compliment on the side. We opened all of the doors to let the breeze in and settled in to watch the England vs. Italy game. Unfortunately, England wasn’t as lucky as Spain and Germany, because their tournament dreams ended on penalty kicks. Alas, I wasn’t even able to make it to the conclusion of the game…I fell fast asleep midway through the second half. Apparently beach bars and a day of sunshine with adorable and lively children was enough to zap my energy.

That would be Matt in a German soccer jersey, much to the delight of our German friends.

Mundane Musings

In honor of summer, my musings center around all things beach and fun. To officially kick off summer, a friend just let me know that tomorrow night, Spain celebrates La Noche de San Juan. Apparently, the beaches in our area (and all over Spain), including the one in our neighborhood, will be alive with festivities throughout the night. Bonfires and partying are set to commence and continue until the wee hours of the morning! Sounds like we now have Saturday night plans. :) Until then, enjoy some of the things that are putting me in the mood for all-night festivals and summer in general.

These colorful Erin Lightfoot porcelain bangles are so unique and fun. They’d accessorize with just about any outfit selection and I think they’d especially be fun for a Spanish summer!

I recently made this barbeque chicken pasta dish, recipe courtesy of Eat, Live, Run, and it was incredible. The sauce was light and perfect for summer, while the spice gave just the right amount of kick. Jenna’s recipes are not only easy to follow, but 100% worth making. Every time I make one of her recipes, we devour the dish in minutes. The best part is that she promotes healthy living, so most of her recipes fill you right up without being too heavy. Seriously, check out her website; I’m there every day looking for something new.

Finally, I’m absolutely loving these old swimsuit, weight-gain advertisements I’ve seen randomly on the Internet. No matter your figure, stop worrying about how you look in your bathing suit (which I’m guilty of) and just have fun this summer. Curves = SEX APPEAL ladies! My favorite two quotes:

“There’s no use shutting our eyes to the fact that ‘sex appeal’ – an attractive, well-developed figure with all its feminine allure – is a big contributing part to a girl’s happiness and success.”

“Now there’s no need to be ‘skinny’ and friendless, even if you never could gain an ounce before.”

Date Night

Date Night, Gibraltar, King's Bastion, Prometheus

A little blurry, but you get the idea.

I can’t remember the last time that Matt and I had an official date night. And by that I mean dinner and an activity planned in advance. Sure, we’ll decide on whim to forgo cooking at home for a dinner out from time to time. However, that’s merely a desire to have someone else cook and clean for us, because we’re feeling too lazy to go grocery shopping. Last night, though, Matt and I planned an actual date night, which involved dinner followed by a movie.

I’ve been dying to see the movie Prometheus since my first peek at the trailer months ago. I’m a nerd in the fact that I love science fiction, therefore I love the Alien movies. The first Alien movie, done by Ridley Scott, was easily the best of the franchise, so when I heard that he directed Prometheus, my inner-geek screamed. We don’t go to the movies very often in our neck of the woods, because in Spain they are in Spanish, and in Gibraltar, movies only stay in the theater for a limited time and we usually miss their showings. For example, I still haven’t seen The Hunger Games, because it was only in theaters here for a week, maybe two. So, Matt and I planned to go to dinner after work, followed by the nine o’clock showing of Prometheus at King’s Bastion Leisure Centre.

A look at the bowling alley area of King’s Bastion Leisure Centre.

We started our date night with dinner at Cafe Rojo, located in Irish Town off of Main Street in Gibraltar. People rave about this restaurant for having a fantastic menu and high quality cuisine. Matt has been there a couple times, but I’d never been, so I was very much looking forward to it. Cafe Rojo has a quaint, but elegant feel when you step inside. Roses and candles adorn all of the tables, with matching red linen. The menu includes dishes like roasted lamb shoulder, half honey roast duck, steamed and grilled fish of all kinds, and a robust pasta and risotto section. Usually, I would have ordered a risotto, because when done well, it’s one of my favorite dishes (Matt makes a mean Parmesan risotto). However, I was in the mood for fish, so I enjoyed a fresh salmon in a lemon, parsley, and garlic butter sauce, while Matt devoured a spicy beef salad. It really is a lovely little place and I’m keen to go back sometime to dig in to any of their other raved about dishes.

Tickets bought!

Next it was off to King’s Bastion Leisure Centre for the movie. This place has it all, since it serves as Gibraltar’s center for entertainment. Built into the side of the old wall, the leisure center has a bowling alley, pool tables and arcade games, a gym, a movie theater, an ice skating rink, a wine bar, a restaurant, and much more. We’ve been there to bowl before and I’ve been once to see a movie with some girlfriends. We don’t spend much time there, but when we have a hankering for an indoor activity, this is the place to go.

As for the movie itself, Prometheus was awesome! While I may be a critic of literature, I am not when it comes to movies. I go to the movies simply to be entertained, and this movie accomplished just that. It was creepy, visually stunning, and full of interesting plot developments that left me talking about it after. We even did a bit of internet research when we got home to read about what others thought certain elements were meant to portray. I may not go to the movies often, but I sure am glad we took an evening to see Prometheus.

All in all, not only was I with the cutest date, but it was a really fun night. While stopping for a bite to eat on a whim from time to time is certainly nothing to complain about, especially since I love the food here, it was special to actually plan an evening from start to finish.

Swimfan

Cheers to the crab goggles!

After a three day work week, my first weekend back was a three day weekend. Lucky me! The Queen’s birthday was on Monday, and the residents of Gibraltar take all matters of the crown very seriously. Therefore, Monday was enjoyed by us who work and live in Gibraltar, and I certainly cannot complain about that. My first weekend back in Europe wasn’t jam-packed with activity, nor was it boring. I would say it was the perfect start to summer…

Thanks in large part to the weather in our area, I spent a lot of time in the pool last weekend. I can’t remember the last time I seriously swam in a pool without the worry of getting my hair wet (us blondes have to be careful when it comes to chlorine!). I’ve decided that this summer, I just don’t care. Matt and I started Saturday off with a trip to Carrefour, which is like a local Walmart. Our mission? Groceries for the long weekend (supermarkets aren’t open on Sunday) and yard accessories. We got floats for the pool, new pillows for the seats around our outdoor table, citronella candles to keep the bugs away at night, and goggles. Matt got himself regular no-fuss goggles; I purchased a pair of “crab goggles,” as I’ve started to lovingly refer to them. These goggles make me so happy. They seriously bring out the inner-child within me! We spent the rest of Saturday “testing out my new goggles.” Basically, like a little kid, I swam under water a whole bunch. I even invented a “clean the pool” game, which involved me swimming to the bottom to collect leaves. I know – I’m one crazy kid!

Swimming in my crab goggles!

That evening we met our friends out for dinner at one of our favorite local spots, La Finca. We were seated at a lovely table outside and enjoyed an array of spicy Thai food. As always, dinner was followed by cocktails and a couple games of pool in the back. To top off the night, our friends joined us back at our home for awhile to continue catching up and chatting. The crab goggles were a hit among everyone. ;)

Sunday and Monday were spent in pretty much the same fashion. Lots of swimming and sunning. Except we decided that it would be fun to have my boyfriend, the swimmer, teach me the proper way to freestyle. That turned into a lesson on how to do the proper flip-turn. In the end, I had the best teacher you could possibly get and now we have a new exercise routine for the summer. I always thought swimming laps for exercise looked boring, and let’s face it, tough! Yet, with Matt showing me the right way to do it, I learned that it’s actually a great workout. I’ve always known that it’s easier on your body than running, but I’ve never been a big swimmer. And although I get pretty worn out at this point, the old mantra rings true: “practice makes perfect.” There will be a lot of practicing in my pool this summer!

The table now has colorful pillows to spice up the decor and place mats for chowing down.

I’ve Been Everywhere Man

Texas, Arizona, Sedona, New York, Belmont, Detroit, Michigan

Me and my good friend Em out and about one of my first days in Dallas!

A month has come and gone since my last post, and for that, I’m very sorry. I find that when I’m doing a hefty amount of traveling, I can’t seem to settle down long enough to post anything of worth. That being said, the obvious reason for my disappearance was that I’ve spent the better part of the last thirty days traveling. At this point, I’m sure you’re imagining me in exotic locals, like the colorful markets of Morocco or the storybook streets of Germany. Yet, I was somewhere much more special: with family and friends in the United States of America.

The first stop on my American road trip was Detroit, Michigan to visit my sister, Melissa. I’d never been to Detroit, so having this handy tour guide was a must. Melissa lives in an area called Birmingham that is so full of charm and suburban wonder that the Detroit stereotype seems much more imagined than reality. The reality is that Detroit is a struggling city, but areas like Birmingham make up for it. While I was there, my cousin Dan came in town to visit, I met Melissa’s boyfriend, and I just relaxed as much as possible. We had a great time introducing me to true Detroit culture.

While in Detroit, I made the short trip to Saline to see my Aunt Jen, Uncle Phil, and my cousins Maggie and Jack. They only live about an hour from Melissa, so she’s lucky enough to get to spend loads of time with them on a regular basis. It had been at least two years since I’d seen them, so I went out to catch Maggie and Jack’s soccer games and to hang out at their house for a visit. Melissa joined us for most of the day, during which time we spent most of the time playing Taboo outside on the deck. The next day, my Aunt Jen took me to Ann Arbor to see the University of Michigan and to have lunch. It was really special to get to spend some extra time with all of them, even if I would be seeing them again later in the week. After two days in Saline, though, it was back to Detroit to spend a couple more days with Mel before the next leg of our journey.

With my sissy in Detroit.

From Detroit, Melissa and I traveled to Arizona to see my cousin Katie get married. And we weren’t just spectators – we were bridesmaids! Katie’s immediate family lived in Dallas when we did, and all of the kids are close in age. So we spent many weekends getting into trouble with our awesome cousins. Fast forward to the present day, one of us getting married, and all of us there to take part. The wedding was held in Sedona at an amazing resort called L’Auberge. From breakfasts outside along the creek bed, to the stunning backdrop during the ceremony itself, this was a wedding not to be forgotten anytime soon. Every single detail was planned to perfection and by the time she walked down the aisle, Katie looked as stunning as any bride could get. There was a great amount of joy and love in the air, from sentimental and hilarious speeches to time well spent with family. My favorite moment during the weekend? A moment that lasted a few hours – getting ready with all of the girls. And I mean ALL of the girls. Katie invited all of the women to stop by during the day, so aunts and cousins and grandmothers and friends flooded the room, creating such wonderful memories all day.

With my Papa at the wedding reception.

After a whirlwind weekend, I was off to Dallas. I wanted to extend my trip to visit with my immediate family a little longer and to see my Dallas friends. I may go months without seeing some of these people, but when we do get together, it’s like nothing has changed. For instance, while playing Catch Phrase with a group of about fifteen friends at a Mexican brunch on Sunday at the end of the weekend, I was hit with a wave of nostalgia. I can’t count how many times in college that my friends and I would slowly wake on a weekend, gather together, and find food to replenish our energy, whether it be at Pei Wei or The Diner or some other greasy joint. There is also nothing like hanging around the house with my parents during the summer, swimming in our backyard pool, and popping down to the McKinney Square for a burger or bowl of pasta. That is what home should feel like: familiar and comfortable.

Nothing like a week with your family and best friends!

Alas, my time in Texas came to a close and the last leg of the journey was upon me. As excited as I was to continue my travels and see Matt after three weeks, I was overwhelmed with sadness to leave. Yet the show must go on, and the final leg of the trip was New York City. This wasn’t originally part of the plan, but when I’ll Have Another won the Kentucky Derby and then the Preakness, Matt was adamant that we travel to the Belmont to see the Triple Crown race. While Triple Crown hopes disappeared with the sudden injury of I’ll Have Another (and I must say, this made for a very upset boyfriend), we made the best of the weekend and enjoyed New York and the Belmont for what they had to offer. We saw Times Square and strolled through Central Park. I took a ride on the merry-go-round and we had a beer while watching the motorized boats on the lake. We walked down Madison Avenue and did a bit of window-shopping, ate some pretty incredible food both evenings, had lunch in Battery Park and went to the 9/11 Memorial. This last activity took my breath away and was quite sobering, especially when we came across a family mourning the loss of a victim. One cannot truly put into words the feeling of being at Ground Zero.

Belmont, Dallas, Texas, Detroit, Michigan, Sedona, Arizona

Reconstruction at Ground Zero

As for the Belmont itself, the crowd was still rather large considering it was no longer a Triple Crown race. We bet the races leading up to the big event, and Matt (the horse racing guru) won a lot. The big race was exciting nonetheless, with a last-second victory by Union Rags. The weather was perfect – just slightly overcast so that there was a continuous breeze, keeping the temperatures down and the enjoyment up. On Sunday, Matt flew back to London, followed by me on Monday, and together we finished the journey to Gibraltar on Tuesday.

While I’m happy to be back with Matt and at work again, there’s really nothing quite like going home again. When you move abroad you make new friends, create a home for yourself, and do everything possible to create a normal world in which you can feel happy living. However, new experiences and new places do not replace the friends and family back home, rather they add to your happiness. The same could be said after I left Ireland and the friends and “family” I created there. I try not to think of it as leaving behind anymore, but instead, making anew. That being said, I don’t forget where I come from or the people that have impacted my life along the way, so going home – whether it be Dublin, Dallas, Cincinnati, Norman, Indianapolis, etc. – means reconnecting with those that I love and the country I’m proud to be from.
