An Old Friend and a Few Apes

From our first evening out and about in Gibraltar

Over the weekend, one of my dearest friends (and an old college roommate) came to visit me all the way down here in Spain/Gibraltar. Christine happened to be travelling in Europe, specifically to visit her aunt in London, so it was much easier for her to take a flight into Gibraltar. I was beyond excited to not just catch-up with an old friend, but to show a fellow American what this unique area of the world is all about.

Christine arrived in Gibraltar on Friday afternoon to hot weather and a bit of craziness in the border town of La Linea. For the past couple of weeks – and for a couple more to come – military planes have been practicing on the Gibraltar runway. Gibraltar is so small that not only are these planes extremely loud (even at the office with the windows closed), but they also cause quite the traffic jam. Before, a few commercial planes would come in and out of Gibraltar in a day; now, it’s a constant stream of take-offs and landings all day long. Since traffic must travel across the runway, every time an aircraft takes off, traffic comes to a halt. So, when I picked up Christine, it was mayhem! Welcome to Gibraltar. :)

Our first activity was lunch on the beach between Sotogrande and Torreguadiaro. There are two fantastic beach bars set up on that beach, and we settled in at one for a couple glasses of tinto verano and huge salads. Following lunch, we went back to the house to change clothes and head back to Gibraltar for a night out. We met Matt for a drink and then enjoyed dinner at Gaucho’s. This was the first time Matt met Christine in person, so I was delighted to introduce him to one of my best friends. Following a delicious dinner of Argentinian steak and sea bass, we met up with a group of friends at the casino for drinks and spent the rest of the evening playing in Gibraltar.

On Saturday we took it easy and I showed Christine what the neighborhood has to offer. We went to the Alcaidesa beach and set up our chairs close enough to put our feet in the water. Unfortunately, a bit of fog rolled in, but we decided it was okay because we were still getting sun and it kept the extreme heat at bay. Time flew by down at the beach and before you know it, it was late afternoon. We went back up to the house to hang by the pool for a little bit, then got ready for another night out. This time, it was the Spanish night life that we wanted to share. Dinner was at one of our favorite tapas restaurants, Pura Tapa. We feasted on our favorite dishes and a few new ones, then made our way to the Alcaidesa beach bar. It was a little too early for dancing, but we ran into some co-workers and joined them for drinks on the beach.

Just hanging with the apes!

On Sunday, we took Christine sightseeing in Gibraltar. Who comes to Gibraltar without going to the top of the rock to see the apes? Luckily for us, there was no line going into Gibraltar, so we drove across and took her to Europa Point first. Europa Point is the closest point to Africa, and the views are phenomenal. Unfortunately, the wind was fierce that day, so we only spent enough time to take a couple of pictures before making our way to the cable car. At the top of the rock, the apes were out in full force doing their thing and as always, Matt ended up with an ape on him. During this visit, there was some sort of dissension among the pack and a group of apes ended up in a big fight. In the middle of the chaos, they all charged in my direction, one ape nearly taking me out as it collided with my leg. Needless to say, I was screeching and hopping around trying to get out of the action!

After a day in the sun on the rock, we decided to cool down with a drink at the Caleta Hotel, followed by dinner in Spain at our other favorite spot, La Finca. As always, the food, the drinks, and the service at La Finca were wonderful, making for a perfect end to the weekend. I was so sad to see Christine go on Monday. It’s not often that my American friends can make over to this part of the world, so I was thrilled to get to share my life with her. And, of course, it was so great getting to spend time with my old friend. We vowed to make this a tradition, but next time, we’ll take a trip to some place new!

Mundane Musings

In honor of summer, my musings center around all things beach and fun. To officially kick off summer, a friend just let me know that tomorrow night, Spain celebrates La Noche de San Juan. Apparently, the beaches in our area (and all over Spain), including the one in our neighborhood, will be alive with festivities throughout the night. Bonfires and partying are set to commence and continue until the wee hours of the morning! Sounds like we now have Saturday night plans. :) Until then, enjoy some of the things that are putting me in the mood for all-night festivals and summer in general.

These colorful Erin Lightfoot porcelain bangles are so unique and fun. They’d accessorize with just about any outfit selection and I think they’d especially be fun for a Spanish summer!

I recently made this barbeque chicken pasta dish, recipe courtesy of Eat, Live, Run, and it was incredible. The sauce was light and perfect for summer, while the spice gave just the right amount of kick. Jenna’s recipes are not only easy to follow, but 100% worth making. Every time I make one of her recipes, we devour the dish in minutes. The best part is that she promotes healthy living, so most of her recipes fill you right up without being too heavy. Seriously, check out her website; I’m there every day looking for something new.

Finally, I’m absolutely loving these old swimsuit, weight-gain advertisements I’ve seen randomly on the Internet. No matter your figure, stop worrying about how you look in your bathing suit (which I’m guilty of) and just have fun this summer. Curves = SEX APPEAL ladies! My favorite two quotes:

“There’s no use shutting our eyes to the fact that ‘sex appeal’ – an attractive, well-developed figure with all its feminine allure – is a big contributing part to a girl’s happiness and success.”

“Now there’s no need to be ‘skinny’ and friendless, even if you never could gain an ounce before.”

Part Three: It Went By So Fast

Beach, Bar, Sunshine, Relaxation, Gibraltar, Europa Point, Main Street

Me and my Daddio at dinner in Sevilla.

After a full and eventful day in Gibraltar, Thursday was named “relax by the pool” day. While traveling around Spain and seeing new places is fantastic, Matt and I rented this house so that not only we would enjoy it, but so that our friends and family who visit can enjoy the Costa del Sol, as well. My Dad and I had considered a quick trip to Ronda that morning, but when we woke up to another beautiful day, we decided to stick with the girls and relax. And it ended up being a perfect decision.

Our day, in a nutshell, consisted of laying in the lounge chairs by the pool, watching the gardeners trim the bushes; we went on a power walk around the neighborhood, legs burning the entire way up the hill; my Dad and I made a quick trip to the market in the village to get the fixings for Bloody Mary’s (the famous recipe courtesy of my super cool Uncle Mike and Aunt Rhonda); and when Matt got home, we cooked up homemade BLT’s. It was relaxing, it was fun, and it was rejuvenating.

On Friday we made our way back to Gibraltar, but this time to see things we missed while up on the rock. We started our day with coffee with my good friend, Tina. She and I grab a coffee at least one morning every week, so I was looking forward to introducing her to my family and keeping up with tradition. After coffee, we went back to Main Street so that Melissa could exchange a purchase made the previous day. Casemates square was abuzz with people, so we grabbed a table under an umbrella at a delicious Italian restaurant. I’ve been looking for a great salad, and I found it there – a cajun langoustine salad with caesar dressing, yum. After lunch we grabbed a cab and took pictures on the south side of the rock, called Europa Point. Unfortunately, it was hazy, making the view of Africa nearly impossible to see. To finish our Gibraltar excursion, we had a drink on the terrace at the Caleta Hotel and watched the different ships make their way in and out of the Straight of Gibraltar.

Saturday, our last day, was bittersweet. Our plans for the day were awesome, but it was sad knowing that the trip was almost over. The whole gang, Matt included, packed up for a final trip to Marbella. On the way, we stopped at one of my favorite places in the area, Laguna Village. I love to have lunch at an organic restaurant right on the water, so I was happy to share the great food and atmosphere with my family. The wraps at this restaurant are absolutely delicious, but we also tried a couple new items – fried squid, hummus with ground chorizo, and my sister enjoyed quesadillas that I’ll have to go back and try. I couldn’t help but order the same thing I always do, the California wrap.

From Laguna Village we made the short drive up the coast to our hotel in Marbella, the Guadalpin. Matt and I have stayed at this hotel in the past, and we highly recommended it for this trip. Not only is it a beautiful hotel, but it’s right on the beach. We threw on beach clothes and spent the afternoon with loads of spring breakers, drinking tinto veranos at the beach bar in the sand. Following a short siesta, we all dressed up in our nicest and went into the old town for dinner. We stumbled across a beautiful restaurant with an exquisite menu and a gorgeous winter patio set up with heaters. I feel like I’ve talked so much about food, but gosh was this place amazing. Matt and I shared the lobster risotto for our appetizer, while my Mom and Dad enjoyed it as their main dish. They split stuffed mushrooms and Melissa started with bruschetta. My blackened salmon was flaky and delicious, while my taste of Matt’s thai beef skewers left me wanting more. The ambiance and cuisine was the perfect end to the week. Not to mention, Matt was lucky enough to hear hilarious – or slightly embarrassing – stories of our childhood. :)

The next day, when Matt and I returned to the house, it felt so quiet. We filled seven and a half days with so much activity and fun that I was at a loss for what to do. While the visit couldn’t have been more different than Dublin the year before, it was just as amazing. I have to thank my parents for basically taking me on a vacation too!

Part Two: Cadiz and Gibraltar

Beach, Sunbathing, Cadiz, Atlantic Ocean, Sevilla, Pizza, Promenade, Monkeys, Rock, Gibraltar

Sunbathing in Cadiz after a scrumptious pizza lunch!

I woke up Tuesday morning finding it hard to say goodbye to Sevilla. From the beautiful streets and the architecture, to the culture and tasty tapas, Sevilla ranks up there as one of my favorite cities I’ve visited since moving to Europe. But it was time to move on. When my parents saw my blog about Carnaval in Cadiz a few weeks ago, they insisted we make a stop there if possible. Luckily for them, it was either a straight two hour drive back to Alcaidesa, or we could go an hour southwest to Cadiz and then the other hour home. It seemed like a no-brainer…

We found public parking by the beach and the promenade, and staked out a table at a pizza place next the ocean. After a full day of tapas the day before, we were ready to change up the palate, and pizza sounded just right. Lucky for us, the pizza we ordered was perfect and hit the spot. It was a beautifully sunny day, so I opted for my first pair of shorts of the season. We were astounded by the amount of people still donning heavy jackets; it’s like they weren’t quite ready to accept that spring had arrived. In fact, the sun was so warm, that throughout lunch my chair seemed to magically rotate with the shade. When there wasn’t a morsel of pizza left, my sister ran in to change into her swimsuit and made haste to the sand by the Atlantic Ocean. I was not quite ready for “bikini weather,” so I did what any normal person would do sitting in the shade by the beach…I ordered a drink. While my sister soaked up the sun, my parents and I enjoyed refreshing cocktails while chatting. We enjoyed ourselves so much that the time passed too quickly, and we unfortunately missed an exploration of the old town. In my opinion, though, it wouldn’t have seemed like much in comparison to Sevilla, so the way we chose to spend the afternoon was just perfect.

Sisterly love on the Rock of Gibraltar.

Wednesday dawned bright and beautiful, which was great, because we’d set aside this day for Gibraltar. Unfortunately, Matt needed to work all week, but we were able to pull him away for a couple hours for the famous Rock Tour. It started with a ride up the cable car, much to my father’s delight (insert sarcasm here). Not the biggest fan of heights, he bravely scaled the humongous rock with only one comedically-timed comment. Once at the top, the family was able to experience the breathtaking views that the Rock of Gibraltar has to offer. And not to be outdone by our other trips up the rock, the apes were out in full force. And for the first time, we made contact. Signs everywhere indicate that it is against the rules to touch the apes. But who’s to keep the monkeys from touching us? While walking by the monkey den and taking pictures, Matt casually stuck his arm out to the side, right by a monkey minding his own business. Of course, said monkey took interest and swung his arm out to grab Matt’s. In a matter of seconds, the ape climbed onto Matt’s arm and was pulling at Matt’s buttons. Fair play to you, Matt! This would easily go down as one of our most memorable experiences on the rock.

Beach, Sunbathing, Cadiz, Atlantic Ocean, Sevilla, Pizza, Promenade, Monkeys, Rock, Gibraltar

Proof!

We then walked down the rock to the caves, which were interesting, but nothing to go crazy about. There are a few interesting things to point out, though. For one, there is a stage area where Gibraltar puts on concerts. They use this space, because the acoustics are amazing. I think it’d be interesting to see an orchestra play in the Rock of Gibraltar. Secondly, there is all kinds of history and folklore associated with the caves. Homer was said to have used them as inspiration and the caves were once referred to as the “entrance to Hades, the underworld.” Lastly, this was my first time inside a cave, and I learned that I’m a tad claustrophobic. Maybe it’s from seeing the movie, The Descent; or maybe it’s the thought of being in a large cave and losing light – how would you ever find your way out? Though this was a very small cave, after about 10 minutes, I was ready to see the sky again.

A short, but terrifying cable car ride down the mountain later (think walking out onto a long plank extended over a mountainous rock), we settled in on Main Street for a drink. Melissa went crazy with shopping fever, purchasing some authentic and beautiful Spanish-inspired dresses, and I picked up my dry cleaning. I like to throw a little normalcy into an otherwise unique vacation. ;) After Main Street, we met Matt (who had returned to work after the rock tour) at Gaucho’s, our favorite Argentinian restaurant, for a humongous meal. I am never disappointed when I eat at Gaucho’s! Matt, my father, and I had the Argentinian filet, which is always cooked to perfection; Melissa had the best sea bass I’ve ever tasted; and my mother ordered the shoulder of lamb, which could have easily fed a table of four, and most of which made it home in a doggy bag. By the time we made it home that evening, we were exhausted and stuffed.

No matter how many times I visit Gibraltar with friends or family, I always have a great time. And Cadiz is looking more and more like a great beach destination if Matt and I want to get out of town for a weekend. Between frisky apes, plentiful sunshine, and delicious food, part two of the trip went off without a hitch.

Mini-Vacay Sunday

Finger Sandwiches, Beach, Picnic, Sunshine

About to dig into my finger sandwich on the beach...yum!

Yesterday I went for a solo stroll around our neighborhood, because the weather was just begging me to. The sun was shining and people were out and about, so I made my way down to the beach to see if there was any chance it felt warm down by the water. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the sand was warm thanks to the bright sunshine we’ve been having lately. As I walked along the water, I came up with the best idea: a mini-vacay Sunday. I immediately began thinking of ways that Matt and I could spend Sunday enjoying what our neighborhood normally has to offer for those who choose the Costa del Sol as their vacation hotspot.

Sunshine, Sunday Vacay

A little glimpse at our picnic! Wine, cheese, peanuts, etc.

I was extremely happy to wake up this morning and find that the weather hadn’t pooped out on me. The sun was shining, the breeze was slight, and I was itching to get our mini-vacay started. The first item on our agenda? A picnic at the beach, of course! We packed a cooler with finger sandwiches (made by Matt), cheese, chips, nuts, and not to be forgotten, a bottle of wine. We threw that in a bag with a cheese board, napkins, and towels for the sand, and made our way down to the beach. Clearly, we were not the only people with this idea; we found other locals crawling the beach with their dogs, their jogging shoes, and their children. We nestled into the perfect spot, soaked up the sunshine, and watched a group head out into the Mediterranean in wetsuits and snorkeling equipment.

The last time I went on a picnic was in St. Stephen’s Green in Dublin, Ireland. Boy, was this a different experience. Matt and I had the best time munching on our food and people/dog-watching. We brought a little football and threw it around for awhile. And to top it all off, halfway through our afternoon, a school of dolphins swam by close to shore, jumping high out of the water in full view.  If the weather keeps up like this, I can’t imagine that we won’t stop by the beach every weekend that we’re here.

Golf, Picnic, Beach, Sunday Vacay, Sunshine

Matt's first golf swing since his hip surgery in July!

As the sun rose high into the sky and our food on the blankets started to dwindle, we packed our things and moved onto activity #2 on the agenda: the driving range. We’ve been talking about hitting golf balls since we moved here, but we had to wait a little while for Matt to get the okay from his hip doctor. We stopped by the house and exchanged our beach stuff for our golf clubs. The golf club is just around the corner from our house, so we were there in no time.

I’ve recently mentioned that our area is a ghost town right now. Well, it looks like I found where everyone hangs on the weekends! Matt and I made our way over to the driving range and spent the next hour or so playing around. It’s been a long time since either of us have hit a golf ball, so we took it easy. After our buckets were empty, we went to the putting green and squared off in a head-to-head battle. Much to Matt’s dismay, I was ON today, and after taking the lead by 4 strokes, he declared me the winner. ;)

Beach, Picnic, Sunday Vacay, Sunshine

My bite-sized cucumber sandwich at our picnic!

We noticed that the clubhouse was filled with people sitting on the patio, enjoying drinks in the sunshine, so we decided to join. Activity #3: have a drink with the locals! Unfortunately, they were out of Guinness, so we grabbed a pint of lighter beer. Even though we were nearing the end of our planned mini-vacay, we still had American football, tasty homemade food, and for Matt, a cigar on the patio to look forward to. I feel so blessed to be able to spend days like this with Matt, and I hope that as the weather continues to get warmer, our weekends continue to bring us something new and fun!

Bittersweet Ending

I could go on and on about my last days in the French Riviera, but I truly feel like I’ve done it justice. Yes, we took one last day trip to Antibes, but to describe it would be repetitive. It was beautiful, the weather was perfect, the food was great, and we did a lot of shopping. This isn’t to diminish our last day on the trip, but there is only so much more I can say. I will, however, provide some pictures of our last days in the French Riviera so you can see it for yourself.

French Riviera

Fresh off the train into Antibes! I'm ready to get this last day started.

French Riviera

I loved the buildings in Antibes, especially the shutters on the windows and railings on the porches.

French Riviera

The beach in Antibes was far less rocky than Nice. I love the sailboats in the background and the blue sky and ocean.

French Riviera

This is a nice view along the outer road next to the sea. The tall building is the Picasso museum.

French Riviera

One last look at the sea and the beach in Nice. So sad to be leaving! Definitely keeping the fedora, though. ;-)

So, on one last note, I have to say THANK YOU so much to Matt’s family for taking us all on this amazing trip. They were so generous all week and I had a fantastic time. It was bittersweet leaving to come home – on one hand, I would miss the weather, the sea, the food, and just vacation itself. On another hand, I knew I had a fun month ahead of me back home with Matt and friends. Either way, I definitely will never forget this trip.

Though the Nice trip is officially over in both presence and in spirit through my blog, I am not short on topics for future posts. I recently read three amazing books that need reviewing and life abroad is an ever-changing experience!

Côte d’Azur

The French Riviera

Into the alleys of old Nice on one of our first days.

After a week of blissful hiatus, I am back and ready to divulge to you the experiences Matt and I enjoyed in the French Riviera. We were so very lucky to be treated to this fabulous vacation by Matt’s super generous family. Robert, Matt’s Dad, took that month-long trip back in September to Paris to learn French through immersion classes, and invited us along for a couple of visits. This April, he’s at it again. And as a special treat, he invited the whole gang along for a week-long vacation before classes get started. Michael (Matt’s brother), Anna (his fiance), and Nancy (Matt’s Mom), all popped over to Nice last Saturday and we hurried along behind on Sunday.

We were a bit worried stepping off the plane in Nice, because the rain was coming down HARD. Matt joked that Dublin weather will haunt us for the rest of our lives, but do not fret, because we had beautiful weather the rest of the week. Because of the downpour, touring Nice by foot wasn’t looking appealing, so we settled for a group lunch nearby. The food in Nice is very Italian in influence, so imagine pastas and pizzas all week (though I will be sure to expound upon some of our authentic Mediterranean and French meals later on). It was so nice to all be together and visit, so that’s exactly what we did the entire first day. The condo was set right on the main beach strip with a view of the ocean and room for all of us. We settled in that first day, enjoyed some wine and cheese for dinner, and did a ton of catching up.

The French Riviera

One man's trash is another man's treasure - antiques at the market.

We awoke the next day to absolutely gorgeous weather. Sure, the ground was still moist from the showers the day before, but it was nothing true sightseers couldn’t handle. We went first to the market just around the corner from the condo. This is the same famous Nice market that appears in the movie To Catch a Thief with Carey Grant and Grace Kelly. On Mondays, the market consists of old antiques, which Matt found quite interesting. He loves everything antique and old, so I was surprised that we didn’t leave the market with a boatload of stuff. Just browsing was an experience, though. Old canes, parasols, art, books, etc., gave us an idea of what old Nice must have been life back before we were born.

From the market, Matt and I joined Michael and Anna for a small lunch at an outdoor cafe. We went truly French with stuffed vegetables, a croque madam, and bruschetta – yes, the last being Italian-influenced as I mentioned above. At noon, there was a large KABOOM, at which point all birds took off and the four of us nearly flew out of our seats. Matt asked the waiter, “what the hell was that?!” to which he smiled and replied, “it is noon.” Ha, simple and straight to the point; we all got a good laugh at that response.

The French Riviera

A stunning view of the town and mountains beyond.

We then joined up with Nancy to wander into the long park at the edge of old Nice. Matt went off in search of a cigar shop while the rest of us wandered around in awe of our surroundings. The large palm trees and fountains in the center of town were grandiose, and it was by them that we found a fabulous view of the mountains behind Nice. Metropolitan life was buzzing in the surrounding squares and we had quite a nice time strolling around for the rest of the afternoon. Matt and I briefly broke off to check out the all-pebble beach and I stuck my feet in the Mediterranean for the first time since Majorca, Spain. It was freezing, but the sun was warm and I knew that at some point in the week, we’d be laying on those flat stones soaking up the rays.

The French Riviera

Lobster! So intense dissecting this thing to eat, but rewarding in the end.

That night, the entire gang gathered to head over to the port on the other side of the hill for dinner. We chose a table outdoors at a seafood place by the harbor, to which began one of the most delightful nights of the week. We all tried to order authentic food – minus Matt who does not like seafood – and boy were we in for a surprise! Robert, Anna, and I received lobsters open-faced in the shell, with shell-crackers for for the claws. This was my first time with lobster cooked this way, and it was hilarious! Growing up, Matt spent summers in Maine with his parents and grandparents, and Nancy became somewhat of a lobster connoisseur. Thankfully, she was not shy when it came to helping us learn the ways of lobster-cracking. With fantastic French wine flowing and plenty of entertainment, this was easily one of the best nights we had on the trip as a group.

THe French Riviera

The monument at night - the colors in the middle are of the French flag.

Walking back to the condo, we passed a French monument built into the side of the cliff-face, honoring the French fallen in both of the World Wars. During the day, and lit up at night, it was a stunning reminder that we are so lucky to be given these fantastic opportunities. This was just the beginning of our trip, and on that stroll home, the lights of Nice filled me with excited anticipation for the week to come.

Stay tuned!
