Date Night at Home

Last week I wrote about how date nights need to be incorporated into our life more often, but I found out on Tuesday that date night at home can be just as fun. While going out has its perks – unique activities and someone else cooking/doing the dishes – there is certainly something to be said about staying in. Our recent date night at home consisted of fire-lit tiki torches, a cigar, veggie burgers, champagne, and television shows on the computer.

With the kind of weather we’ve been having, a little champagne on the patio is the perfect way to spend an evening.

All of these lights were turned off for the actual “television-watching,” but I couldn’t help but capture Matt with his cigar.

Yes, that is The Bachelorette. And yes, in Matt’s defense, I make him watch it. But in my defense, I’ve been watching a lot of European soccer lately…

Easter Weekend

One of the perks of living in Europe is that they definitely do not go light on the holidays. I became used to the occasional three day weekends in America, but over here they love four day weekends.  We had a four day weekend for Easter, with Good Friday off and as they call it in Gibraltar, Easter Monday. With a four day weekend like that, this means that the preceding work week is only four days, as well as the following work week. Come on – is that not the most amazing perk ever? Unfortunately, Matt fell under-the-weather the week leading up to Easter, so our long weekend rendezvous included the best at-home activities we could dream up…with tons of great food on the menu.

Spain, Gibraltar, Easter, Weekend

We made a monster brunch on one of the beautiful days of our Easter weekend! These breakfast burritos could barely be contained, but were oh-so-good and best enjoyed on our patio. On wheat tortillas, we filled up with salsa, bacon, hash browns, cheese, and eggs! And, of course, brunch wouldn’t be complete without a pint of Guinness.

Moet, Brie, Breakfast Burritos, Spain, Gibraltar, Easter, Weekend

At another point in the weekend, we had a proper champagne and cheese afternoon. I could have cheese and crackers for a meal, that’s how much I love brie and all other types of cheeses. On the left side, you’ll see Matt’s favorite combination: cream cheese covered with jam. Usually we reach for the Veuve Clicquot champagne at the grocery store (tax free and duty free in Gibraltar!), but the Moet was on sale, so we switched for the day.

The next series of pictures are from Monday when the weather was incredible; we took a walk around the neighborhood and down to the beach. I promised a friend, who’s an avid runner, that I’d post a few pictures of the hills I run (powerwalk mainly). They are excruciating, but man are they a great workout!

This is just a small glimpse of our neighborhood. It’s very Mediterranean and on a beautiful weekend, it’s impossible not to stroll around lazily. And now that the tourist season is upon us, there are people everywhere! At the hotel in our neighborhood, we could see outdoor dance lessons in the distance during our walk. And the beach is slowly becoming more crowded on the weekends. We have another four day weekend at the end of the month to look forward to, but for now, happy belated Easter!

Party at the Casa de Matt and Emily

Casa, Shindig, Gathering, Appetizers, Champagne

The fridge full of food and drink, all set to go. Everything is pre-made in those tupperware containers!

In December, Matt and I hosted a gathering at our new home to “break in the house.” It was such a fantastic night and man did we make a ton of food. We’ve wanted to have another shindig, but with jam-packed schedules in January and February, we never got around to it. Last night we finally opened the doors yet again to our friends and hosted a lovely evening filled with finger food, champagne, and beautiful weather.

At our first party in December, I felt like I barely had the opportunity to leave the kitchen and mingle. We were over-ambitious with our menu and our guest count was at least double to the attendance last night. I spent the majority of the evening refilling the table and stirring up new batches of taco meat and appetizers. This time around we planned a little bit better and put together a finger food menu. Every item on the list could be made ahead of time and kept in the refrigerator. All we would have to do is add things to the oven throughout the night. It ended up being fantastic planning, because this time, from the very start, I was able to sit with my friends and chat with a glass of champagne in hand. I kept an eye on the food and got up and down as the food on the table got low.

On the menu? I’ve made most of it in the past, which kept things easy (Ina Garten always says the key to party-planning is to stick with what you know and do best). So, we put out bacon-wrapped water chestnuts, bacon and cream cheese crescent rolls, sour cream and ranch dip, queso in the crock pot, and buffalo chicken bites. All came out perfectly as they always do and were crowd-pleasers. I added a couple of new recipes to the list that I found on a couple of my favorite blogs. On First Look, Then Cook, I stumbled across spinach bites and just had to experiment. I loved the green color added to a mix and who doesn’t love a recipe made with stuffing? On Cupcakes and Cashmere, Emily made mac and cheese cups for her Oscar party and they looked just too delicious not to try. Thanks to these trusty bloggers, I added some new appetizers to my arsenal and they did not disappoint!

Like always, I made way too much food! But it’s better to have too much than not enough, and it just means we had fabulous left-overs today! All in all, it was a fantastic evening. The weather has been perfect, so we spent most of the time on the patio. One of our guests brought his dog and it was so fun watching him run around our yard in pure bliss. It’s always great to get-together with friends and last night was no exception. I can’t wait for the next shindig!

Be Mine

Valentine's Day, Gun Range, Be Mine

An oldie but goodie...me and Matt nearly 3 years ago.

Valentine’s Day marks a special occasion for me and Matt, and not just because of its romantic tendencies. Three years ago, Matt and I went on our very first date, on February 14th, making this holiday our anniversary. It was actually quite a coincidence, contrary to how it seems. We did not plan to go on a date on Valentine’s Day, it just happened. We’d met through a mutual friend and by the 13th, we’d gotten to know each other on a couple of nights out. The night before Valentine’s Day, we got into a discussion about guns – random, yes I know, but we’re from Texas. I’d never shot a gun before and one of Matt’s hobbies was to go to the gun range. He made a joke that we should go the next day, and since I liked him quite a bit at this point, I emphatically encouraged the idea.

Valentine's Day, Be Mine, Gun Range

And we have this lovely lady to thank for putting us in the same room!

Well, the next morning I received a text message telling me to get ready and that he was taking me to shoot a gun. Looking back, I’m quite glad this was our first date activity, because it’s so unconventional that it makes the occasion extremely memorable. We spent the day teaching me the art of loading and shooting a gun, followed by lunch at Jake’s Hamburgers, and that night we went out with some friends. Who knew that was the start to whirlwind romance that would take me to Ireland and now to Spain?

Three years later, I like to think that Matt and I still go on unique dates. Last year, we traveled to St. Moritz, Switzerland for the annual White Turf Horse Race on Ice on Valentine’s weekend. This year, we’re going to Cadiz to participate in the Carnival festivities. In the meantime, we spent February 14th in the best possible way – relaxing at home. We cooked steaks on the grill, I made a pasta side, we enjoyed it all with a vintage bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne, and after we watched the most recent episode of The Bachelor (clearly, this was my request).

I am so lucky to have Matt as my amazing partner in crime. Not only does he let me choose what we watch on tv and take me on awesome trips, but I can now load and aim a gun with superb accuracy. ;)

Playing with the settings on my camera, I was able to get this neat photo.

Dessert! Since I'm not a huge fan of sweets, we went with an assortment of bite-sized dessert. And, of course, a cigar is dessert for Matt.

Another playful pic with my camera. We love champagne - especially Veuve Clicquot. :)

Ghost Town

Irish Pub, Gibraltar, Guinness

A look at O'Reilly's from our seat outside the other night. I can't wait until it warms back up and the live music comes back!

It is an interesting task figuring out what to do on the weekend in our neck of the woods. I’ve mentioned before that there isn’t a tremendous amount of nightlife in our area, especially this time of year. The Costa del Sol is a very popular second home hotspot, especially for people living in the U.K; this place gets mobbed with vacationers from May until August. Yet, when the summer season ends, the beach bars close up and more than half of the population scatters until the next year.

This proves problematic for the rest of us who live year-round. I’m convinced that the only two restaurants in our little town are closed until the warmer months return; we drive by from time to time to check. Therefore our weekends are a bit hit-or-miss. We were lucky last weekend, because we had gatherings to attend both Friday and Saturday night. However, this weekend Matt and I were left dumbfounded for something to do. I’ll take you through it…

Since I finished my first full week of work since moving here last Friday, I was exhausted. Yet the weather was being cooperative that day, so Matt and I decided to grab a Guinness at our favorite Irish pub in Gibraltar, O’Reilly’s. At most pubs around here, if you ask for a Guinness, they’ll give you a glass and the canned version of the famous stout. Not at O’Reilly’s. They pour a proper pint of Guinness from the tap, just how we like it. Granted, it’s not as good as the Guinness straight from the source in Dublin, but it’s the best we’ve got around here. So, we sat outside and visited, enjoyed our beverages, and had a relaxing Friday night.

O'Reilly's, Gibraltar

A much deserved Guinness after a long week!

Saturday was a beautiful day, but we were content to lounge around the house. With my return to work, I don’t get to spend as much time in the house as I used to. We decided to catch up on some of our favorite American television shows and a bit of American football. In the evening, however, we were ready to get out and about. What to do in the winter months around here? We made our way up to the San Roque Club to enjoy some champagne and sushi! Kamakura is a fantastic Japanese restaurant around the corner from our town that is famous for fresh sushi and delicious main dishes; our favorites are the tempura roll and teriyaki beef medallion dish. Matt and I always have a great time and last night was no different.

Terra Sana, Laguna Village

A view from lunch at Terra Sana on one of the beautiful days earlier this year.

Today, Sunday, I was all amped up to go shopping in Marbella. Shopping here is not an easy task, either. There are few clothing stores I like in Gibraltar on Main Street, but only a few. The closest thing we have to a mall is called La Cañada in Marbella. We’ve been once before, but we don’t go too often as it’s a good 30-40 minute drive away. Todo, I don’t think we’re in Dallas anymore! Well, today I woke up with the promise of fluorescent lighting and mobs of people, only to drive 40 minutes up the road and find that it’s closed on Sunday. CLOSED ON SUNDAY?!?! Deflated and completely depressed, I forlornly stood in the parking lot staring at the beautiful mall.

In an attempt to salvage my ruined day, Matt took me to my favorite little beach-side village on the coast, called Laguna Village, for lunch. There is a bit of shopping there, but not the kind I had set out to do. Luckily, though, there is a fantastic little restaurant called Terra Sana that specializes in organic food, wraps, and smoothies. I absolutely love their California wrap – it’s got the best blend of flavors and it reminds me of American cuisine. We sat outside right next to the sea, and though it was cloudy, made the most out of our altered day.

As we made our way home I suggested we stop at the grocery store to pick up the ingredients for homemade hamburgers. Since we’d be watching American football this evening, I wanted an American staple to go with our plan. Can you guess what happened next? Yep, the grocery stores are also closed on Sunday…

It seems that during the winter months the Costa del Sol turns into a bit of a ghost town. Matt and I will have to make some adjustments living here, more than we already have. Shopping and grocery store runs will have to happen on Saturday, and Gibraltar might start looking like a more appealing nightlife destination. That, or we’ll just have to do some more traveling!

Black Tie and Christmas Cheer

I’m sad to say it’s been well over a week since my last post. Between my work at Suas, submission of my first published article (yea!), events, and Christmas extravaganzas, I’ve been a very busy gal. I’ll try to hit the key points as best I can, especially our main event of the season, because it’s officially time to rededicate myself to my readers. Why call this a “series of Emily’s European adventures” if I don’t chronicle them?

Standing outside in the freezing cold collecting for Suas!

Last week held a variety of activities for me, including drinks with girlfriends, fundraising for Suas by way of street collecting in Christmas hats, an appointment with a dress designer to pick the perfect one for Matt’s company Christmas party, and pampering galore for the same gala. Not to mention that Christmas is just around the corner, leaving me with very little time to shop before heading home for the holidays. By Friday I was pretty exhausted, so a night in with Matt to rest before the big party was in order.

Saturday finally rolled around, bringing with it Matt’s company Christmas party, a night that was highly anticipated as I was absent the year before. Held at the Burlington Hotel in Dublin, the party was a black tie gala complete with a poker tournament and 4-course meal. For the event, I wore a one-shoulder, long, midnight blue dress with matching roses stitched into the strap. My hair was pulled up into a classic chignon and I completed the look with a mix of pearls and gold jewellery. Matt looked extremely dapper in his black tuxedo, bow tie, and pocket watch (a gift from yours truly).

Matt playing in the poker tournament.

Matt played in the poker tournament, drawing the attention of the entire crowd when he made it to the finals and eventually won it for his team. After the tournament came dinner in the beautiful winter-themed dining hall. The meal itself started with a goat cheese appetizer, potato leek soup to follow, a choice of chicken or beef main course, and a multitude of desserts.  The whole time the wait staff kept the wine flowing, while classic Christmas music mixed with an array of soft jazz completed the ambience. Matt and I sat at a table with a few friends and made some new ones, and by the time dinner was over, we were ready to move onto round 2 – of 3 rounds – for the evening.

Following dinner, DJs took to the stage to provide music for dancing, while an open bar made itself available to all. Cuban cigar rollers, who were actually flown in from Cuba, rolled unique and individual cigars for anyone interested. That was something even I, who is not an avid cigar smoker, could not pass up. Matt and I rotated between the throng of smokers outside, to watching the dancers inside until it was time for round 3.

At dinner - unfortunately this was the only picture I got. But a friend took a better one that I'll post when I receive it!

Round 3 was an after-party at the club downstairs. I can only say so much about this aspect of the evening. What I will leave you with is a mental picture of people in formal wear, thumping music, expensive champagne, and extremely good times. We didn’t head home until 6 in the morning – that’s right, 6 in the morning. Needless to say, Sunday was spent either in bed or on the couch and I was asleep very early Sunday evening. It was well worth it though; I had a fantastic time, enjoyed spending it with Matt and our friends, and I now have a gorgeous gown to wear to another event!
