A Texas-Inspired Summer

Okay, so June was a bad month for this blogger, but can you blame me? With all of the traveling going on, sometimes I feel like I’m in a rush while checking my emails! I recognize that I only posted 4 times (yikes!), so I officially vow to make July a fantastic blogging month. It shouldn’t be hard, since I am back in Texas and have the whole summer to immerse myself back into an American way of life. Along the way, I hope to look at things with a fresh perspective like I did when I moved to Europe, thus entertaining you with things I hadn’t noticed about life in Texas and America before. And what better way to start than with the 4th of July weekend?!

I still have a couple European hotspots to write about that Matt and I visited on our Western European vacation expedition, but I think I’ll mix those in with my every day writings at some point. For now, I want to say a quick “happy 4th of July weekend!” and visually prepare for 3 days of bbq, sunshine, water, cold beer, and of course, fireworks!

A Day in London

Emily + vacation = bad, bad blogger. In an attempt to keep June alive and my readers somewhat interested, here are a few pictures from our fabulous journey to London. Our friend, Emily, is living there for the summer with her boyfriend, and we were so lucky to not only have a tour guide for my first trip to the city, but free accommodation, as well! Plus, it was an opportunity to visit with an American friend in Europe. How great is that?!

Travel, European Adventures

We saw the absolutely breathtaking Westminster Abbey. On the other side, I waved to my imaginary crowd, just like Kate Middleton. ;)

London, Travel, European Adventures

I liked this view of Buckingham Palace. We were lucky, because we stumbled across the palace during the changing of the guard, but because of the spectacle, it was packed with people and my other pictures aren’t as good. Still, it was a neat experience!

London, Travel, European Adventures

Matt liked the Animals in War statue a lot. It is “dedicated to all the animals that served and died alongside British and allied forces in wars and campaigns throughout time.”

London, Travel, European Adventures

We had a drink at this pub on the balcony in the Covent Garden Market, where we watched the strangest street performer. He had himself wrapped in cling-wrap from head to toe. There was quite a lot of buildup for such a strange (and frankly lame) trick.

London, Travel, European Adventures

Trafalgar Square is so neat – with it’s fountains, view of Big Ben in the back, and the London architecture all around, I thought this was a cool area. Check out the Olympic countdown in the bottom right of the picture.

London, Travel, European Adventures

These are just some of the highlights of our day. Emily was the best tour guide and took us to see just about everything! Along with what you see above, we walked through the Piccadilly Circus, strolled across the Thames, and had dinner at a fantastic and chic Dim Sum restaurant. I’d love to go back and see a show or actually go through a museum, but in just a day, we saw a lot. We had great hosts and I’m so glad I can check London off of my list of places I wanted to see.

Bittersweet Ending

Going Away Party, Wine Tasting

With Lauren, a great friend and host of our going away party! We started the night at a wine tasting.

Remember when I said at the end of my last post that life would be changing quite a bit for me and Matt in the coming months? Well, if you are reading this, you stayed tuned and I am ready to reveal. I would’ve waited a little bit longer, but sitting here on my couch this Sunday evening amidst packed bags and empty walls, I am compelled to finally share. So, for those of you who do not know…

Matt and I are leaving Ireland – permanently. That’s right, we’re moving this Tuesday.

After one amazing, educational, at times difficult, and life-changing year, we’ve made the decision to move on. Now don’t feel too shocked. When I decided to move to Ireland, it was with the knowledge that it would only be for about a year or a little longer. Yet that doesn’t change the fact that this feels oh so bittersweet. Though life was a challenge here at first, it became my home. I love our apartment, the farm next door, the Irish way of life, Suas, the AWCD, and most importantly, all of my new and fantastic friends. And in one year, many of these friends became like family.

Going Away Party, Wine Tasting

With Abby, a newer friend, but one I know I'll be visiting!

As someone with a lot on their mind and with so much to say, I can’t seem to find the words to truly articulate the way I’m feeling about the changes in our life right now. Last Wednesday, my closest friends threw a going away party for me and Matt, and though I didn’t cry, each and every goodbye hug and toast made things more real for me. I will take a lot of great things away from my life in Ireland and I am encouraged by the idea that I will be back someday.

So bear with me, because Matt and I are about to jump on the crazy ride of life. Along the way I will be sure to share just about everything, including one week long tour of Europe before flying to Texas. In the meantime, pop back to some of my old posts. I am so very glad I created this blog, because with just a click of a button, I’m transported in time to some of the most memorable, amazing, and crazy moments of my time in Ireland!

Some of my favorite pictures from the last year. :)

When visiting Matt in March 2010, we went out to Killarney. It was absolutely beautiful.

At my favorite restaurant in Dublin, The Port House. Yum!

With the gals in the St. Stephen's Green park for lunch. It was a nice work day break, and even though we look all bundled up, it felt pretty nice out!

Still my favorite of all the trips Matt and I have taken this past year - Bruges! This trip was my inspiration to start the blog, because I wanted all my family at home to hear about it.

Our lovely view of the animals in the Airfield next to the apartment.

And who can forget hiking in the Dublin mountains?!

Plagiarizing My Work is Not Okay!

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then I should be highly flattered at this moment. Unfortunately, I can’t help but feel a bit peeved, irritated, and ripped-off. My blog recently picked up a ping-back from another blog post – they had linked something on their blog to mine. I was curious and a little excited to see how my blog has spread. Imagine my surprise when I saw they had nearly plagiarized my most recent blog post, The Lemon Crepe & Coffee Co. This blogger completely stole my post! They used the same ideas, the same sentence structures, and the same flow. They seemed to think they could get away with it by changing up a few adjectives and sentence fragments to make it “unique.” I’ll be quite frank here, but the more I read, the more I wanted to punch this person in the face. I could feel my blood pressure rising as I realized my hard-written review was splattered on someone else’s blog.

Now, they might argue that at the end they included a convenient, “See Original Post,” with a link to my blog. Doing this does not make stealing someone else’s work okay. Changing key words and phrases, but essentially using the same article is also not okay, either. It is one thing to write your own stuff and then quote others properly to support your point; it is entirely another when you lazily take from someone else. As an aspiring writer using this blog space as my portfolio, I was not happy when I discovered this thief. Do your own work!

The only solace I find in this situation is that their reinterpretation of my article is terrible. In their attempt to make their article sound different, it just seems disjointed and unresearched. They don’t even sound like they’ve ever even been to Dublin (and I have to point out that their picture included is of the South William Street location, which is not seconds from the Trinity College campus, as they claim). And I guess another positive in my situation is that when you Google “The Lemon Crepe & Coffee Co.” my blog comes up as the number one site.

I won’t give this blog the satisfaction of even mentioning their name, because then my trusty readers would be tempted to visit their site, thus giving them more viewership. If they do read this, I want them to know that taking my work is not okay, and if they are interested in becoming writers themselves, they’re in for a long road – unoriginal and uninspired work makes for poor writing, plain and simple.

Oh, and plagiarism is illegal…

An Egyptian Evening Under the Stars

Egypt, Egyptian Ambassador, Charity Event, American Women's Club of Dublin

Here is the front of the program for the event.

Since I moved to Ireland, I’ve written many blog posts about the American Women’s Club of Dublin. Most of the fabulous events I’ve attended have been with the club and it is through connections in the club that I’ve made my closest friends. In all reality, my experience in Dublin this past year wouldn’t have been as wonderful had I not found this club. As crazy as it is to believe, a year has come and gone, and we had our very last “large” event of the year on Friday: An Egyptian Evening Under the Stars.

Now, I’ve told you of our many philanthropic endeavors, from the cooking demo at Karen’s home, to my poker evening and chili cook-off. The Egyptian Evening Under the Stars was our last philanthropic gala, organized to yet again benefit the ISPCC. The Egyptian Ambassador to Ireland’s wife, Abir, happens to be a member of our club, so they gladly hosted us at their beautiful home. Who else can say that in one year they’ve attended events at the American Embassy and the Egyptian Ambassador’s home? The evening consisted of a silent auction with prizes like a full-length mink coat, a signed book and personal portrait sitting with the world famous photographer Barry McCall (he even attended the event!), opera tickets, hotel B&B stays, etc.; a raffle with even more prizes; singing entertainment; a belly-dancing performance; a buffet of traditional Egyptian food; and an open wine and beverage bar. The dress was cocktail attire and thankfully the weather held out with beautiful, sunny skies.

Doesn't he look so handsome? We had such a great time!

It really was a magical evening. Matt and I love any opportunity to dress up! I was finally given the chance to wear a dress that he bought me for Valentine’s Day when we were living apart. I’ve had it for over a year and never a reason to wear it! Matt stuck on his American flag pin, for which he received quite a few compliments – I mean, we are the American Women’s Club. With Matt’s help, I put together the program for the evening, which looked fantastic. The best part, most of our friends were there and we had a great time catching up and letting loose. After the event, a group of us even headed out to the Four Seasons bar for late night drinks.

All in all it was a beautiful night. I’m not sure yet how much we finally raised, but I’m sure it was a great success. I have to pay compliments to the club’s Philanthropic Chair, Karen, because she has tirelessly worked day and night for each event this year, and this evening was her greatest success. Did I mention that she works full-time? I don’t know how she does it. Needless to say, I’m a bit sad that the final event of the year has come to a close. I’ll miss these opportunities for all of the women to get together for a great cause!

Cinco de Mayo – The Ireland Edition

Cinco de MayoIf it is the 5th of May, that can only mean one thing: Cinco de Mayo celebrations! Today, you will learn a little something new about this blogger. I’ve told you before that my favorite holiday is Thanksgiving, with its fabulous food, sports, and fall weather. Did you ever stop to wonder what my second favorite holiday could be? Christmas you say? Halloween? Valentine’s Day? No, no, and no. Cinco de Mayo is a glorious, magnificent holiday, and it happens to take the second top spot in my heart.

There are many reasons why this is so, reasons that will lead you to learn even more about me. 1.) I studied the Spanish language as my minor in college. This holiday gives me the perfect opportunity to use said Spanish intermittently with English in regular conversation. 2.) I love margaritas, Corona, chips and salsa, and queso – I don’t get enough Mexican-inspired cuisine here in Ireland. 3.) I found a sombrero in college that followed me from residence to residence. No matter how hard I tried to give it away or leave it behind, it always ended up back in my possession somehow. That’s fate. 4.) Similarly, when I was a child, I chose a stuffed parrot at a garage sale out of all the stuffed animals on the table. I named him Norman and decided he was my Mexican parrot – children have interesting imaginations, what can I say? He eventually came with me to college (in the city of Norman – coincidence?), so subsequently, Norman celebrated every Cinco de Mayo with me.

Cinco de Mayo

Yep, that would be me with my sombrero and Norman! Quite an old picture - look how short my hair is and what am I wearing?!

Now, ironically, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated significantly more in the United States than it is in Mexico, even though it is the commemoration of the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla. This would slightly sadden me, but alas, I hail from the great state of Texas and Cinco de Mayo in that neck of the woods never disappoints.

I have no clue what Cinco de Mayo is like in Ireland, because I wasn’t here just yet last year. My plans are to wear my best and brightest Mexican clothing (yes, I have such clothes), meet up after work with the girl’s at a place called Cactus Jack’s, have a few margaritas, and slip bouts of Spanish into the conversation all evening. Adding to the festivities, Matt plans on making tostados for dinner when I get home. Sadly, I’ll be missing my sombrero and my Mexican parrot – they didn’t make it to Ireland. :-( With new places, though, comes new traditions, so I’ll just have to improvise this year!

In the Spirit of Wedding Season

It’s been a little while since I’ve popped on here to say hello, and that’s thanks in part to a pretty hectic life these days. You’ll find out more in the weeks to come, but I wanted to remind you that I’m still here! Today will be a short post, but I do have something on my mind: weddings. That’ll be thanks to the Royal Wedding, which, I’m embarrassed to admit, made me tear up a little while watching. There is nothing better than the modern day fairy tale – average girl falls in love with a prince, marries him, and becomes a princess. *Sigh* I watched every second of it, gushing over the Duchess of Cambridge’s perfection, the eclectic and gorgeous hats, and the traditional wedding.

It also got me thinking about the impending wedding season. In just 3 short weeks I’ll be reunited with my lovable and crazy family for my cousin’s wedding. I am so beyond excited about this, not just because it’s happening on beautiful Lake Lure in North Carolina (hello vacay!), but also because I adore my Dad’s side of the family thanks to the good time that is ALWAYS had when we all get together. I am literally counting down the days.

So, in the spirit of wedding season, here are some pictures to get you in the mood:

Sheep, Bank Holidays, and the Royal Wedding Make Me Feel European

As the end of April creeps up on us, it is crazy to think I’ve been in Europe for almost a year now. At this point last year, I was closing up loose ends at work, starting to pack up my apartment, and booking my one way ticket to Ireland. Reflecting on that period in my life and how things have changed, I need to use this post to illustrate a few more European differences that come with the Irish way of life.

Bank Holiday Weekend

On one such bank holiday weekend, Matt met me in Paris.

Bank Holidays – These happen on the first Monday of a few months in the year. In 2011, they occur in May, June, August, and October.  On bank holidays, the banks close, and the rest of the country takes a holiday – awesome, right?! And, these scheduled holidays are not counted against the allotted vacation days in your employment contract. Now, at this point you’ve probably guessed it…we have a bank holiday coming up. May Day happens on May 2nd, meaning that Matt and I have a three day weekend coming up, for no other reason than it is a bank holiday. :-)

St. Patrick's Day

A blast from the past - my first St. Patrick's Day when I was over visiting Matt a year ago!

Other Holidays - On that note, I have to point out that there are quite a few more holidays celebrated over here, adding to our already generous supply. This week we celebrated a day off for Easter Monday, we recognize St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th, and St. Stephen’s Day on December 26th. To these you can add the traditional holiday of Christmas Day and the worldwide celebrated New Year’s Day. Right now the schools are on break for 2 whole weeks, putting the American Spring Break to shame. Now, I realize we miss out on Thanksgiving over here, but I think those previously mentioned bank holidays help make up for it. And, did any of you notice that with Easter Monday and May Day, we have two 4-day work weeks back-to-back? I’m not complaining.

Royal Wedding

Still debating my presence in London for the big event! Thoughts?!

The Royal Wedding - Could I really do a blog post this week about my European experiences without mentioning the Royal Wedding? I mean, come on!!! I am living in prime position to follow all of the Royal Wedding festivities. I won’t need to tune-in in the middle of the night to catch all the breathtaking and exciting moments. In fact, I’ve been tossing around the idea of hopping over to London on Thursday to partake in the madness! Though I might only catch small glimpses, being part of history or saying I was there is a cool idea. This is still a huge maybe, but a girl can dream! Either way, I think it’s safe to say that while it may be big news back in the States, nothing can compare to the excitement that is building in our neck of the woods.

Sheep

You, sir, are one of my favorite things about Ireland!

Our Sheep - The sheep are back! During the winter months, the Airfield next to our apartment took away the sheep, cows, and pigs. I don’t know where they took them, but luckily they are finally back and I am so happy! (*Disclaimer – You may be thinking, “oh silly Emily, they took the old cows and lambs to be slaughtered, duh. And now they’ve brought back a new batch.” However, the Airfield is an educational working farm that does not harm its animals.*) Sheep are funny creatures and I thoroughly enjoy watching them through my window. Right now they are fat with wool and there are little lambs everywhere. The lambs chase each other and hop around a lot. I never thought a city gal like myself would be saying that it’s so nice to hear bahs and moos regularly.

So there you have it. On this Tuesday, the start of our week thanks to Easter Monday, I think a little random rambling about European life was in order. We certainly experience something new almost every day and it’s nice to get back to the roots of my blog to keep you updated on what life in Ireland is truly like.

Beauty and Style

Image via the beauty department

I will admit it: I love Lauren Conrad. I watched Laguna Beach, The Hills, and just about anything else she’s been in (ahem, she appeared on Greek, enough said). What is it that I love so much about her? Her style. She can make the most simple outfit look fantastic and I love that her hair always looks perfect either in those big, loose waves or with a braid. When I moved to Ireland, I jazzed up the apartment with some table books, and Style made the cut. Her make-up is always simple, her nails are always painted, and she never fails to look fresh. I know that she has the luxury of a beauty team behind her, but if they can bestow their wisdom to the rest of us, it helps!

So, as a blogger, you can only imagine my excitement when I discovered that Lauren and her style team have started a website: The Beauty Department. Even better, in essence it feels like a blog itself. They seem down-to-earth, excited in their new venture, and willing to teach the tricks of their trade. Sure, there are all kinds of blogs and websites out there teaching readers how to apply the perfect red lip or how to create vintage curls. However, I’ve never gone wrong with an LC style tip. I imagine I will check in on this website frequently.

And totally inspired by this website, I’ve decided to create a “Style” category in my blog! Style is different everywhere you go, all around the world, so why not report on the unique styles and trends I see in Ireland and other European spots Matt and I visit?

Image via the beauty department

Though this picture is dark, I'd like to note that my hair and make-up at this event were inspired by looks in Lauren Conrad's book, Style.

One Day

It is finally book review time and there seems to be no reading slump anywhere in my horizon. It helps that I spent a week with two people who love to read – Nancy is part of a book club and Anna reads A LOT. So, both had fantastic book suggestions and we were trading by the end of the trip. I also work with a hard-core bookie who is always reading something new, recommending her favorites, and expecting the rest of us to share in our reading adventures. It was through this co-worker that I decided to pick-up the book I’ll be reviewing today.

One Day, by David Nicholls, follows the lives of Emma and Dexter after a fling brings them together on graduation evening. It is on this day, July 15, that their stories are followed for 20 years, sometimes separately, and at others intertwined. We see their friendship grow into an impossibly strong bond and come to understand that they are at their best when they are together. However, we also see how their different paths in life can lead to huge fall-outs.

The concept of One Day was absolutely genius and I LOVED this book. It was witty, funny, heartfelt, and, at times, intensely sad. The idea that you are only seeing one day each year keeps the story moving in a truly unique way. It is almost like each chapter ends on its own cliff-hanger, because you bypass a year moving into the next segment. And then the next installment clears up the happenings of the past year either through internal dialogue or interaction between characters. I also loved that you are in both of their minds, watching them fall in love (with whom, I won’t say!), strengthening and ruining their relationship, and working their way through a complicated life they weren’t quite prepared for when they met at graduation.

Both Emma and Dexter are complex in their own ways, and you slowly learn that they are better together. In most ways, they are brutally honest with one another, but also very secretive in other aspects. I do have one word of warning – I found the story a little difficult to get into. However, it is worth sticking through, because these two characters are worth every page. I laughed, I cried (sitting at a cafe on the beach with Matt – embarrassing), and I became a cheerleader for their relationship. In fact, this book affected me enough that I was thinking about it days after. Certainly worth a read, I highly recommend this book to absolutely everyone!

*I am delighted to learn that this story has been adapted into a film, set to release in July! Anne Hathaway plays Emma, though I do not think she is exactly the right casting for this part – if you’ve read One Day leave me your opinion on this.
