Camuri – A Restaurant Review

Camuri, Terra Sana, Laguna Village, Food, Cuisine, La Finca, Pura Tapa

This is a great look at Camuri in the summer.

A couple weekends ago, Matt and I finally ventured out of our little area of Spain to sample the nightlife and cuisine located up the coast. It’s just too easy to become a creature of habit – we typically stick to local places when it comes time to decide where to have a dinner out. Many of these places you’ve heard of multiple times on this blog, Pura Tapa and La Finca being the most popular. However, in the winter season La Finca closes, and Matt and I have discussed trying to get up north a little more. So that’s exactly what we recently did.

On a low-key Saturday night, we wandered up to Laguna Village, an outdoor shopping area about 20 minutes up the coast with fabulous restaurants. We’ve eaten at Terra Sana, also located in Laguna Village, many times and enjoy it so much that we’ve brought most of our visiting family and friends there for lunch. This night, however, we chose to visit Camuri, an oriental restaurant with a fabulous menu. Located right on the beach, the floor to ceiling glass walls open in the summer, but with the cool winter temperatures, they were closed for our visit.

Laguna Village, Camuri, Food, Cuisine, Restaurant Review

Not the best picture I’ve ever taken, but you get the drift. The sushi is in the top left, the chicken wings just to the right of it, the crab roll close to me and the beef tips in the far right of the photo. {Click to enhance}

As for the food, we decided to choose from their “to share” menu so that we could sample a few dishes. We enjoyed crab spring rolls with a ginger dipping sauce, beef tip skewers, chicken wings in an oriental sauce, and a Nobuko sushi roll comprised of seared beef fillet with rocket leaves, crunchy tempura and a hot chili sauce. Their menu includes traditional sushi rolls like the California roll, but the appeal for us are those unique to the restaurant. When we go back, we plan on trying the Age salmon maki, which is a fried salmon roll with two sauces – orange tobiko and mango. The words “sushi” and “fried” together sound quite tasty!

I’m glad we stepped out of our comfort zone for once, because it ended up being a lovely evening. We will definitely be going back to Camuri, especially in the summer months when the doors open to the beautiful Mediterranean. We’ve also decided that this will start our “tour of the coast.” We plan on continuing our exploration in an effort to find more hidden gems like Camuri!

Shrimp Tacos with Green Apple Salsa

Shrimp Tacos, Green Apple Salsa, Dinner, Food, Recipe, Cooking Light

I was browsing Cooking Light’s website for dinner ideas yesterday before heading off to the grocery store and stumbled across an interesting recipe. I had a hankering for fish and saw this shrimp taco recipe with a home-made green apple salsa. The combination of olive oil, lemon juice, lemon rind, apples and jalapeños seemed like a unique mixture (what do I know, I’m no chef connoisseur) so I thought I’d give it a shot. At only 300 calories, it was definitely worth taking a shot!

Both Matt and I were sceptical as I threw this dish together, which only took about 30-40 minutes. For one, I don’t like corn tortillas, but I decided to stick to what the recipe called for. Secondly, the apple “salsa” didn’t seem like a salsa at all – even Matt commented as I mixed it together that it didn’t look especially appetizing. I told him that you can’t judge a book by its cover and that there was nothing else in the kitchen to serve in its place, so we were having this green apple salsa. Matt skipped the shrimp (not a huge fish-lover), which I’d foreseen – instead, I bought him a flank steak that he could grill up in no time.

Any previous worries I had that this dish wouldn’t satisfy our taste buds was quickly crushed when we took our first bite. These tacos were so good! The sweet of the apple mixed with the spicy of the jalapeño and savoury of the shrimp was incredible. According to Matt, the steak went with the green apple salsa just as well, declaring the meal a huge success. Though I have all of our groceries purchased for the rest of the work-week dinners, I think a quick trip to the supermarket before the weekend is in order. I see shrimp tacos for Saturday/Sunday lunch in my near future!

Mongolian Beef

Mongolian beef, Recipe, Table for Two blog

Our Mongolian beef basically looked just like this copycat recipe of P.F. Chang’s! {photo courtesy of mommysavers.com}

This week I made a delicious Mongolian beef recipe, courtesy of a P.F. Chang’s copycat recipe I found at Mommy Savers. Since Matt is a huge fan of Asian food – Japanese, Chinese, Thai, sushi, beef, noodles, you name it – I’m always trying to find new recipes I can do at home that taste like the real thing. This recipe seemed not only doable, but easy enough that I’ll be happy to remake it often.

Matt and I changed ours up just a bit from the original recipe, though, because we love adding veggies to our rice. We used brown rice instead and cut out the green onions, since neither of us is really a fan. Matt loves broccoli, so he steamed some broccoli to add to his dish. I prefer carrots, so we sautéed some chopped carrots and added that to mine. The beef was easy to make and the sauce was a winner – Matt claimed that this may be one of his favorite dishes that we’ve made in recent months.

It’s just too bad that I forgot to take any photos of our end result – we were just too excited to dig into our dish! However, ours looked almost exactly the same as the photo featured on Mommy Savers. I definitely recommend this dish if you have a hankering for Asian take-out, but want to leave all the nasty preservatives behind.

Endless Summer

4th of July, Independence Day, Summer, Spain, TexasHappy July! I cannot believe June is already over. It really went by so quickly and I wish I could get all of that time back. Summer in Spain is like nothing I’ve ever experienced: beach bar parties, late night tapas, tons of time spent in the pool, and comfortably sitting out on the patio in the evenings. After living in Texas for so long and dealing with the oppressive heat, it’s a nice change being able to sit outside without sweating! With the start of July, I suddenly panicked – I don’t want summer to end! I know we have a long way to go until that happens, but the days are going by so quickly and before I know it, the beach bars will close up and I’ll be one sad señorita.

In the meantime, I’m going to soak up everything the Spanish summer has to offer. This week, though, I can’t deny the mother of all American holidays, Independence Day, so I will be infusing my western culture into my daily European life. With 4th of July inspired barbeque recipes and a bit of red, white, and blue, I don’t plan on forgetting where my roots are firmly planted. Here are some things that have my creative juices flowing:

4th of July, Independence Day, Summer, Spain, Texas

Like always, I pulled a bit of inspiration from Pinterest in today’s search for the best ways to celebrate the 4th of July. Well, Pinterest led me to {mel’s kitchen cafe} and a post including 45 recipes for the 4th! Among the recipes there are meats, sides, drinks, and desserts. I think I’ll be using these recipes for the rest of the summer, as well.

4th of July, Independence Day, Summer, Spain, Texas

At {Creations by Kaitlin} I found this DIY American Flag that I’m certain I’d be able to successfully create myself. I’m not the most crafty person in the world – in fact, I quite suck at crafts. However, I think this project may fall within my abilities.

4th of July, Independence Day, Summer, Spain, Texas

Add a pair of red wedges and/or a red scarf and you’ve got an adorable 4th of July outfit here. I’ve got my outfit planned for the 4th and it includes an American Flag scarf, but you’ll have to wait until Wednesday or Thursday to see. ;)

Oh my! I love this! When I first published this post, I hadn’t seen this photo yet. Thanks to Pinterest, which linked me to {Preptige} I can add it after the fact. She looks absolutely 4th of July chic!

Date Night at Home

Last week I wrote about how date nights need to be incorporated into our life more often, but I found out on Tuesday that date night at home can be just as fun. While going out has its perks – unique activities and someone else cooking/doing the dishes – there is certainly something to be said about staying in. Our recent date night at home consisted of fire-lit tiki torches, a cigar, veggie burgers, champagne, and television shows on the computer.

Date Night, Home, Veggie Burgers, Cigar

With the kind of weather we’ve been having, a little champagne on the patio is the perfect way to spend an evening.

Champagne, Date Night, Home, Veggie Burgers

All of these lights were turned off for the actual “television-watching,” but I couldn’t help but capture Matt with his cigar.

Yes, that is The Bachelorette. And yes, in Matt’s defense, I make him watch it. But in my defense, I’ve been watching a lot of European soccer lately…

Weekend Wrap-Up

Germany, Spain, Italy, France, England, Euro 2012, Sunshine, Summer, Food, Gibraltar

The scene in Gibraltar at kickoff of the Germany game.

Over the weekend, Matt and I decided to experience what Alcaidesa and Gibraltar have to offer during the summer months, which started Friday in Gibraltar immediately following work. The Euro 2012 (soccer for you Americans!) is currently the forefront of entertainment and competition over here, so we joined a large group of our German friends to watch the Germany vs. Greece game. I’ll tell you what – there is nothing quite like watching two countries battle it out. While we take sports in America very seriously, Europeans leave nothing on the table when it comes to loyalty for their nation’s team. Our viewing party took place at Savannah’s in Gibraltar, situated on the marina in Ocean Village. The restaurant is currently operating a huge outdoor television and by the start of the game, the entire surrounding area was packed – it was a good thing we had a reservation! Germany ended up winning the match and in the process, I learned some “colorful” German cheering language.

Steak and veggie kabobs on the grill!

Saturday greeted us with cloudy skies, much to my dismay. We had plans for friends to come over with their children to swim and it just didn’t look like it would be in the cards. Instead, Matt and I made a big trip to the grocery store to stock up on food and drink for the weekend and following work week. Luckily, the sun came out for a bit during the late afternoon, so we did a bit of sunbathing and swimming. For dinner, we grilled out another recipe courtesy of Eat, Live, Run, and once again, we were not disappointed. The steak and veggie kabobs with a creamy avocado dipping sauce were incredible. I got to use my food processor, which always make me idiotically happy, and Matt’s marinade for the steak was superb.

Following dinner, Matt and I made our way down to the restaurant at the bottom of the hill. Our plan was to watch the Spain vs. France match with the locals, followed by some nighttime partying on the beach. As for the match – a couple pints, warm outdoor seating and a Spanish win made for a delightful evening. We even ordered a plate of broiled tuna to feed to the stray neighborhood cats that were lurking around the patio. Following the match we walked down to the beach to see what was going on for La Noche de San Juan, and unfortunately, there really wasn’t much happening. However, the beach bar was in full-swing with pumping music and late night party-goers, so we joined in on the fun. We chatted with some other Alcaidesa residents and stayed out a little past our bedtime. ;)

I got to play with this little guy!

Sunday gave us brighter weather, so we had our friends over for the promised swim. There really is nothing cuter than two little ones laughing and splashing around in a pool. Thanks to the planned pool day, Matt and I now own an array of pool toys, most notably a pair of water guns that pretty much ensured not a single person would leave the yard dry – especially not after the kids learned how they work.

After a full weekend, Sunday evening was spent quietly, and that’s exactly what we needed. We used the leftover steak and vegetables from our skewers the night before and turned them into quesadillas, adding cheese and sour cream to the inside, and again using the avocado dipping sauce as a very nice compliment on the side. We opened all of the doors to let the breeze in and settled in to watch the England vs. Italy game. Unfortunately, England wasn’t as lucky as Spain and Germany, because their tournament dreams ended on penalty kicks. Alas, I wasn’t even able to make it to the conclusion of the game…I fell fast asleep midway through the second half. Apparently beach bars and a day of sunshine with adorable and lively children was enough to zap my energy.

That would be Matt in a German soccer jersey, much to the delight of our German friends.

Mundane Musings

In honor of summer, my musings center around all things beach and fun. To officially kick off summer, a friend just let me know that tomorrow night, Spain celebrates La Noche de San Juan. Apparently, the beaches in our area (and all over Spain), including the one in our neighborhood, will be alive with festivities throughout the night. Bonfires and partying are set to commence and continue until the wee hours of the morning! Sounds like we now have Saturday night plans. :) Until then, enjoy some of the things that are putting me in the mood for all-night festivals and summer in general.

These colorful Erin Lightfoot porcelain bangles are so unique and fun. They’d accessorize with just about any outfit selection and I think they’d especially be fun for a Spanish summer!

I recently made this barbeque chicken pasta dish, recipe courtesy of Eat, Live, Run, and it was incredible. The sauce was light and perfect for summer, while the spice gave just the right amount of kick. Jenna’s recipes are not only easy to follow, but 100% worth making. Every time I make one of her recipes, we devour the dish in minutes. The best part is that she promotes healthy living, so most of her recipes fill you right up without being too heavy. Seriously, check out her website; I’m there every day looking for something new.

Finally, I’m absolutely loving these old swimsuit, weight-gain advertisements I’ve seen randomly on the Internet. No matter your figure, stop worrying about how you look in your bathing suit (which I’m guilty of) and just have fun this summer. Curves = SEX APPEAL ladies! My favorite two quotes:

“There’s no use shutting our eyes to the fact that ‘sex appeal’ – an attractive, well-developed figure with all its feminine allure – is a big contributing part to a girl’s happiness and success.”

“Now there’s no need to be ‘skinny’ and friendless, even if you never could gain an ounce before.”

Date Night

Date Night, Gibraltar, King's Bastion, Prometheus

A little blurry, but you get the idea.

I can’t remember the last time that Matt and I had an official date night. And by that I mean dinner and an activity planned in advance. Sure, we’ll decide on whim to forgo cooking at home for a dinner out from time to time. However, that’s merely a desire to have someone else cook and clean for us, because we’re feeling too lazy to go grocery shopping. Last night, though, Matt and I planned an actual date night, which involved dinner followed by a movie.

I’ve been dying to see the movie Prometheus since my first peek at the trailer months ago. I’m a nerd in the fact that I love science fiction, therefore I love the Alien movies. The first Alien movie, done by Ridley Scott, was easily the best of the franchise, so when I heard that he directed Prometheus, my inner-geek screamed. We don’t go to the movies very often in our neck of the woods, because in Spain they are in Spanish, and in Gibraltar, movies only stay in the theater for a limited time and we usually miss their showings. For example, I still haven’t seen The Hunger Games, because it was only in theaters here for a week, maybe two. So, Matt and I planned to go to dinner after work, followed by the nine o’clock showing of Prometheus at King’s Bastion Leisure Centre.

Cafe Rojo, Gibraltar, Date Night, Prometheus

A look at the bowling alley area of King’s Bastion Leisure Centre.

We started our date night with dinner at Cafe Rojo, located in Irish Town off of Main Street in Gibraltar. People rave about this restaurant for having a fantastic menu and high quality cuisine. Matt has been there a couple times, but I’d never been, so I was very much looking forward to it. Cafe Rojo has a quaint, but elegant feel when you step inside. Roses and candles adorn all of the tables, with matching red linen. The menu includes dishes like roasted lamb shoulder, half honey roast duck, steamed and grilled fish of all kinds, and a robust pasta and risotto section. Usually, I would have ordered a risotto, because when done well, it’s one of my favorite dishes (Matt makes a mean Parmesan risotto). However, I was in the mood for fish, so I enjoyed a fresh salmon in a lemon, parsley, and garlic butter sauce, while Matt devoured a spicy beef salad. It really is a lovely little place and I’m keen to go back sometime to dig in to any of their other raved about dishes.

King's Bastion, Cafe Rojo, Date Night

Tickets bought!

Next it was off to King’s Bastion Leisure Centre for the movie. This place has it all, since it serves as Gibraltar’s center for entertainment. Built into the side of the old wall, the leisure center has a bowling alley, pool tables and arcade games, a gym, a movie theater, an ice skating rink, a wine bar, a restaurant, and much more. We’ve been there to bowl before and I’ve been once to see a movie with some girlfriends. We don’t spend much time there, but when we have a hankering for an indoor activity, this is the place to go.

As for the movie itself, Prometheus was awesome! While I may be a critic of literature, I am not when it comes to movies. I go to the movies simply to be entertained, and this movie accomplished just that. It was creepy, visually stunning, and full of interesting plot developments that left me talking about it after. We even did a bit of internet research when we got home to read about what others thought certain elements were meant to portray. I may not go to the movies often, but I sure am glad we took an evening to see Prometheus.

All in all, not only was I with the cutest date, but it was a really fun night. While stopping for a bite to eat on a whim from time to time is certainly nothing to complain about, especially since I love the food here, it was special to actually plan an evening from start to finish.

Leftovers

Just like the last time we had visitors in Spain, I took a million pictures! Even though we returned to Sevilla, a destination I recently was lucky to visit, I feel like I enjoyed a different experience, and I have the pictures to prove it.

Spain, Alcazar, Food, Tapas, Cathedral, Architecture

This was taken next to the Cathedral in a popular area of the city. The tram runs through here, there are bike paths, and little eateries line the street. I just love the facades of the buildings in Sevilla!

Spain, Alcazar, Cathedral, Tapas, Food, Architecture

The Alcazar and its gardens was a stop both with my family and for this trip. It just cannot be missed!

Spain, Alcazar, Gardens, Cathedral, Food, Tapas

There is just endless beauty in the gardens of the Alcazar.

Spain, Bullfighting, Alcazar, Gardens, Tapas, Food

Yesterday I showed you where the Master of Ceremonies sits, today you can see what he watches! It’s quite a bit bigger than the Ronda bullfighting ring.

Spain, Alcazar, Bullfighting, Cathedral, Gardens

This is where the bullfighter enters to face his bull. Just behind me on the left is the last stop for the bullfighter – the Chapel.

Spain, Cathedral, Alcazar, Gardens, Bullfighting

The day wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t pose in front of a statue at the bullfighting ring like the big dork that I am. In case you don’t see it, I’m acting like a ferocious bull…

Spain, Cathedral, Alcazar, Bullfighting, Gardens

With my trusty travel partner! I love him. :)

Spain, Alcazar, Cathedral, Bullfighting, Gardens, Plaza de Espana

Probably my favorite part of Sevilla, the Plaza de España. It’s just so big with intricate detailing and beautiful tile work. Set in the Maria Luisa gardens, it’s a quite impressive.

Spain, Alcazar, Cathedral, Bullfighting, Gardens, Plaza Espana

Like I mentioned yesterday, each province of Spain is represented along the front facade of the Plaza de España.

If you ever make it over to Spain, I highly recommend Sevilla as a stop on your trip! From the Costa del Sol, it’s about a two hour car ride, and from Madrid, it’s only about two and half hours on the bullet train. Be warned, though – summer is HOT. I’ve been told that August and September are absolutely unbearable, which I can only assume is the case since the heat in May was quite scorching during the day. Otherwise, there is just so much to see and do in Sevilla!

Spanish Culture

Spain, Alcazar

The beautiful Alcazar gardens.

While I’m sure you’ve enjoyed drooling over the beautiful summertime styles I presented in my last post for over a week now (insert sarcastic eye-roll here), it’s about time I get back to doing what I do best. My absence of adequate blogging is due to both a busy work schedule and a visit by Matt’s parents. However, the latter provides for much inspiration, even if I did miss a lot of their visit due to the aforementioned busy work schedule. This is what I did get to partake in, though…

Matt’s parents made it to our house on Friday afternoon with the sun shining. Seriously, the weather was phenomenal. This meant it was a perfect evening to take them to my favorite restaurant in our area: Pura Tapa. This energetic tapas bar is the go-to hangout with our English friends in Spain (yeah you, Damon and Jo!), because the menu is vast and everything is delicious. Their array of original and authentic tapas are listed on a chalkboard, and the ambience is fantastic – always packed, full of life. On our visit, we ordered some of my favorites – cuernos de langostino; gorgonzola, pear, and almond balls; and patatas mojo.

Food, Sevilla, Spain, Alcazar

As mentioned, the langostinos, patatas mojo, and cheesy balls!

On Saturday, though, the weather took a turn. Rain invaded the Costa del Sol, so we were limited in activity. Matt was completely fine with this, since it was Kentucky Derby day and his only plans were to watch the pre-race and race coverage. Since it was also Cinco de Mayo, I made queso in the crockpot. On Sunday, we relaxed by the pool and explored the beach, followed by a fabulous dinner at La Finca.

Like I mentioned earlier, my time was limited with the gang since there has been a ton going on at work, but come weekend, it was off to Sevilla! I went to Sevilla previously with my family, so I highly recommended it for this visit, as well. The main difference between the two experiences was the heat. Oh, the heat! During the day, the temperature got up into the 100s, which I should be used to as a Texas gal, but became unaccustomed to while living in Ireland. The key to enjoying the sights without melting into a pool of sweat? Keep to the shade, drink a lot of water, and purchase a Spanish fan for added breeze. :)

Alcazar, Sevilla, Spain, Tapas, Food

Ooooh la la! Part of the Cathedral at night from our rooftop bar seats!

Our first day/night in Sevilla was spent taking a self-guided tapas crawl – i.e. walk around the city enjoying the beauty of Sevilla, but stop every so often for a small tapas plate and a cerveza or tinto verano. At the end of our crawl, I took Matt and his parents to a random spot my Dad and I found back in March. Nestled in between a mass of restaurants is a nightclub that has a massive rooftop balcony. We got there just in time to snag a prime table overlooking the incredible Cathedral. After a few “nightcaps,” we declared the rooftop bar an extremely successful find. Thanks Dad!

On Saturday, we explored the Alcazar, which I’d previously done with my family, but was just as impressive the second time around. We then enjoyed a late lunch, followed by a tour of the bullfighting ring, which I did not do the last time. Matt and I don’t usually jump at the chance to take a guided tour, but I loved this one! The guide was so informative and I learned so much about the bullfighting culture, specifically in Sevilla. Bullfights still continue at the ring in Sevilla from the end of April through September. I so badly wanted to attend the fight the following day, but it was scheduled for the evening and I would have ended up going alone. I guess I’m the only enthusiast in our group!

Cathedral, Alcazar, Sevilla, Spain, Tapas, Food

Just look at that architecture! This is the area where the President and Master of Ceremonies sits during the fights.

Remember how much I raved about the dinner I had with my family back in March? Well, with that kind of review, I had to take this group back. This time, though, I held back at meals during the day, leaving me with a healthy appetite for the amazing cuisine that awaited me! We sat outside just as the heat started to dissipate and went to town on some tapas! Since I stole much of my Mom’s quiche the last time, I got a tapas portion for myself this time, followed by panko-crusted langostinos.  Following dinner, we took a nighttime horse-drawn carriage ride/tour through the city, which was so lovely. The temperature outside was just perfect and we got to see so much more than we would have on foot.

Spain, Cathedral, Alcazar, Bullfighting, Tapas, Food

The Plaza de España – perfect look at the South Tower, the fountain, and the horse-drawn carriages!

Sunday, our final day, started early so that we could see the Maria Luisa park. The first stop was the Plaza de España, which serves as the massive and beautiful government building. We saw it at night during the carriage ride, but that didn’t even compare to the grandiose feel of the massive structure during the day. And since we arrived early, the sun was at a perfect angle and there weren’t as many tourists. With the beautiful fountain in the middle, the daytime horse-drawn carriage rides, and the intricate tile-work of the provinces, it was probably my favorite exploration of the weekend. Followed by a hilarious four-person bike ride (yes, a bike built for four) through the gardens and it was a perfect end to the weekend.

Sevilla is just such a charming city and one that I’m sure I’ll never tire of visiting. Considering the heat, I don’t think we’ll be back until summer is over, but it sure was a great way to start the season. A huge thanks to Matt’s parents for treating us to such a nice trip!
