Sit and Watch the Leaves Turn

My favorite time of year is in full swing. In my opinion, Autumn is easily the best season. Firstly, the weather and scenery is wonderful; depending on where you live, of course. As a midwestern-born girl, I became accustomed to a beautiful fall, and I get to relive that here in Dublin. The crisp air stays in the mid-60s or just below and the leaves change to gorgeous reds, oranges, browns and yellows. Secondly, we celebrate some of the best holidays: Halloween and my favorite, Thanksgiving. Last, but certainly not least, college and professional football are in full swing. I also adore carved pumpkins with a candle inside, scarecrows of all shapes and sizes, the movie Hocus Pocus, and curling up on the couch under a blanket with the windows open.

Yesterday I decided to really celebrate the best season of all. My Friday was free with nothing planned, so I decided to put together the apartment for fall as a surprise for Matt. First, I cleaned up the entire place. It was still a little messy with laundry that needed to be washed and folded from our Paris trip. I only stopped once to video chat with my mom, so I had this place looking nice in no time. Then, I went shopping for decorations and supplies. I grabbed an orange tablecloth for the dining room, a pumpkin bucket to hold “eyeball” candy for the kitchen, skeleton candles, cobwebs, spider lights for the windows, Halloween cups, ghost lights for over the mantle, and sweet, sugary candy to keep refilled on Matt’s desk. As an added touch, I bought an animated witch that makes spooky sounds when you turn her on. She’s round, so I placed her on top of our flower vase in the middle of the table.

I finished setting it all up right before picking Matt up from work. We stopped to pick up groceries and by the time we got home, I was excited for Matt to see his surprise. He walked in the door and a smile grew across his face, taking in the new look of the place. I know part of his happiness was solely based on my excitement to show him our new decor, more so than the decor itself. But that is perfectly fine with me!

Date night then commenced with an Autumn and Halloween-inspired tone. I made a cheesy potato casserole (my favorite) and Matt threw some brats on the grill. We poured ourselves big glasses of Guinness and sat down at our festive dining room table. The windows were open, lending us the sounds of the animals in the farm below and the smells of burning firewood in the homes surrounding. Matt helped with the dishes 🙂 and we moved to the living room to watch Sleepy Hollow starring Johnny Depp. This would be the first of many Halloween movies we’ve planned to watch in the month of October.

And so you have it. Autumn is easily the best season. I’m looking forward to enjoying our festive apartment until October 31st, at which point I’ll then change the decorations to fit a Thanksgiving theme. The weather these days is a major plus, so hopefully we’ll get to enjoy the sunny, but cool and crisp elements for awhile. And, Matt produced the best idea of all: we’ll be carving pumpkins and placing them around our balcony, lit up for all of our neighbors to see. So, cheer on your favorite football team and cut some wood, because we’ll be doing just that until the frozen conditions of winter rears its ugly head.

Love it!! It must be in the Malone blood…this week we did the same thing at our house and tomorrow we’re going to get our pumpkins! I’m glad to hear Matt enjoys it too…another reason to love him!
